He offered suggestions and we agreed on what needed to be done. The evening before the work was done he called to say tomorrow is the day. Fortunately it worked out well for me. The short notice was a bit surprising. The crew arrived, reviewed the project, and set to work. I was a bit concerned over how much was taken from a couple of the trees, but the result looks great and the trees will be healthier. A large Russian Olive is a bit naked, but the structure of the tree shows and it looks great without the dead branches. They cleaned up well with just a few stray leaf bunches left behind. In all, they were efficient and professional. He is busy, and I had to wait a couple weeks before he could take my truck but it was worth the wait. He had the engine steam cleaned and called me with a preliminary diagnosis within a couple hours of dropping off the vehicle. Communicated all issues effectively and notified before performing any work that was expensive. I also like that he did things like flushing the coolant system and changing spark plugs that only cost a little extra now but will save a lot of money in the future. I have been looking for a good mechanic that I can trust for a long time and I think I have finally found that in Jeff. As long as I'm in Twin Falls he'll be performing any work that needs done on my vehicles. Highly recommended! The repair for the head gasket was quoted at $1600. Since I had never had a problem with leaking oil or overheating, I asked them if it was safe to drive the car to another service center for a second opinion. He said that he wouldn't recommend driving the car. I drove it to another mechanic, who found a missing clip on one coolant hose and no other problems with the engine. He saw no evidence that would have lent itself to a misdiagnosis of a leaking head gasket and no major leak of oil, although the coolant was leaking because there was a missing clip. Either the mechanic at Phil Meador was embarrassingly incompetent or malicious, either way I will never be going back to their service department for any reason, including warranty service. Some background: My old repair shop, Bill and Mike's, which I'd frequented for 20 years because of great service and their knowledgeable mechanic, had hired a bunch of young guys this past summer, just before I had the broken timing belt and valves on my 2000 Honda CRV replaced. Things went from bad to worse immediately: I should have known the shop quality control had gone to s*** after I took the car out for a two-mile test drive after the timing belt and valves were replaced and discovered oil flying out from under the valve cover gasket - a valve cover bolt had been improperly inserted and the block's threads stripped; they said they'd fix it, and after they steam-cleaned the engine compartment of all the oil, I picked up the car a few hours later. Within a month of having the engine opened up, three bolts fell out of the distributor mount, nearly stranding me on a back road 20 miles out of cell phone range, in the dead of night. A month later, a fourth bolt holding the engine block grounding wire, fell out. Another month later, the idler pulley had to be replaced, possibly because it had been over-tensioned after the timing belt repair. Finally, an irritating noise in the new idler pulley wouldn't go away as the mechanic assured me it would (it would take a couple of weeks to and quot;wear in,and quot; they said). That's when I went looking for a new repair shop. After researching local mechanics on the Internet, I came across only positive reviews on Angie's List for Ray Campbell's Master Mechanix and decided to take my troubles there. I had the car in at 8:00am and back by 3:00 that afternoon. The problems they discovered? 1. The timing belt had been improperly replaced (off by one notch), causing an erratic idle and loss of power and mileage 2. The new idler pulley was grinding away because the belt had been overtensioned 3. And that valve cover bolt? The threads in the block were still stripped - Bill and Mike's hadn't repaired it, after all! I was shocked at how badly Bill and Mike's had screwed up, but I was also immensely gratified that Master Mechanix had identified these whopper blunders and fixed them all - and for under $300! Needless to say, Master Mechanix is now my regular auto service shop and will be as long as I live in Pocatello. Thank you, Ray Campbell, for providing such quality auto service to our community! FAQs for structural engineering projects in Heyburn, ID
No, it’s not legal for unlicensed individuals to conduct structural calculations for buildings or building repairs. Not only do licensing requirements prevent DIYers from tackling this project, but mistakes can also be extremely dangerous and put your property and anyone inside or near it at risk of severe injury or even death. You should always hire a licensed and certified local structural engineer to make structural calculations.
Yes, all states require structural engineers to carry the proper license, with specifics determined by each state. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to confirm that the structural engineer you’re considering holds the required licensing to tackle your job. Hiring an unlicensed structural engineer will not only cause issues with permits but it could also lead to an unsafe building. The cost of a professional, licensed, and experienced engineer is well worth the investment.
The process of hiring a structural engineer starts by finding reliable professionals in your area and comparing quotes from at least three of them. From there, you can narrow down your selection by asking some leading questions:
Do you have experience working in my specific area?
Do you have professional indemnity insurance?
What will your structural report cover?
Do you charge a flat fee for a structural report or by the hour?
How long have you been in business?
Do you have a list of customer references?
Structural engineers typically charge between $100 and $250per hour, but many jobs won’t be based on a per-hour fee. Instead, the structural engineer will offer a flat rate for the inspection and structural calculations. The flat rate for a structural engineer costs an average of around $550, but you could see prices ranging from $300 to $800, depending on the complexity of your project and how easy it is to access certain parts of your home for the inspection.
Whether you’re building a new home or building an extension on your existing property, you will likely need both a structural engineer and an architect. A structural engineer will determine what loads your foundation and framing can safely handle, and an architect will draw plans according to those structural calculations to simplify the building process. You can start by contacting a structural engineer near you, as many work alongside architects and can get all of the prep work done at once.
