"All About Building and Jeremy Kirkendoll transformed our dated half-bath into a showpiece. We are thrilled with the result. There was no need or option to move walls or plumbing, but all fixtures and plumbing needed to be replaced. We selected the vanity, over-john cabinet, granite, faucets, toilet, and tile. Jeremy removed old fixtures, including a no-longer functional wall register and floor-to-ceiling plastic wall tile. He added outlets and lighting fixtures, and textured sheetrock walls. He installed a mirror that â expandedâ the look of the room, as well as the new vanity and tile. Ultimately, our new half-bath has a truly elegant appearance. Thank you, Jeremy and All About Building. We will hire you again!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

A quality, well-maintained PVC decking can last 30 to 50 years. It’s known for being one of the most durable types of decking materials, with composite decking having a 25- to 30-year average lifespan and some softwood deckings only lasting 10 to 15 years. Luxury hardwood decks like Ipe may last longer than PVC decking, but they can cost more and require more maintenance.

When sourced responsibly, the most sustainable wood decking options are timber trees like redwood, pine, Douglas fir, Nootka cypress, and Western red cedar. These tree species are fast-growing with low carbon emissions. Plus, most timber woods make durable deck materials because of their resistance to rot and decay over time.

It’s best to use two screws to secure deck boards into every joist. Securing the boards to every joist makes the deck more structurally sound, while using two screws on the outer sides of the boards can help prevent warping and cupping.

It is possible to pressure wash your deck, but it’s usually best to leave the work to a professional for two main reasons. First, power washers are expensive, and you can avoid high upfront costs by hiring a deck washing pro instead. Second, you must be careful to use the correct setting to avoid damaging your deck material. You can only clean soft woods like pine with a wide spray and a low pressure; otherwise, the water will leave unpleasant marks on your deck. Hard woods, composite material, and metal can stand up to increasingly higher water pressures.

Whether you need a permit depends on the deck design and local regulations. Most areas mandate a building permit if the deck is over a specific height or if it's attached to a pre-existing structure. Shorter, freestanding decks may not require a permit, but you should check with local zoning ordinances and your homeowners association for specifics.
