"Salesman named Bill was totally disappointing. Work was guaranteed to be done in August 2020, and after numerous emails unanswered by Bill and nonreturned phone calls worked finally showed up in November to do sod and mulch. Bill then said I was 'on the list' for English Ivy install spring of 2021 as it was too late in the season to plant the ivy in November. August 2021 and nothing. I give up."

Stone and Gravel questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on material type, labor, chimney requirements, and structural reinforcements.

Yes, you can do German schmear on stone. You can account for the more textured and rough surface of stone by using a large paintbrush instead of a putty knife. A brush allows you to drag mortar across the stone to get it into all the cracks and crevices. However, a brush will cover more of the surface, so you may need a wet sponge to scrub excess mortar and expose more of your stone.

A chimney cleaning brick or log can help loosen creosote between professional chimney cleaning appointments. Although they can help keep your chimney cleaner, they are not a substitute for chimney sweeping and are not meant to be used regularly.

Modern brick homes have a brick facade over standard framing and sheathing, so the brick offers minimal added structural stability. A home with traditional brick construction is more durable than a stick-built home, as the double-layer brick walls and rebar resist higher lateral wind loads and support heavier loads up top, as well.

The best type of rock for landscaping depends on your needs. If you want to build an affordable driveway, consider gravel. If you want an aesthetically pleasing patio, you can’t go wrong with flagstone. If you’re building a water feature, consider river rock as the base. Start by figuring out your landscaping project, then choose the best rock for that project.
