"I am extremely pleased with the repair of my 45-year old deck and steep wooden staircase from Ted Brown, the Deck Doctor. Ted was quickly responsive in getting me a reasonable work estimate. He began the work quickly, replacing damaged wood while maintaining original deck to keep my costs down where feasible. He was honest, personable and helpfully communicative. He and his assistant worked quickly and provided a thorough clean up each day. I highly recommend him."

"Groovey Hues did a great job. They painted my living room and kitchen at a fair price, plus most importantly, I didn’t have to do it myself. There was also a little paint leftover and they painted my dog house as a throw in."

"After reading all the great reviews, we called Certapro Painters to give us an estimate and, in fact, had them do the job. We felt the price they gave us was fair and competitive. We had some repairs to the home and the entire exterior of our house painted. We were extremely pleased with the quality of the work. Everything was done as promised. We were surprised to find out that they could do the repairs to the house prior to the painting. We were very pleased with the coordination between the carpentry work and the painting. Certapro turned what I thought would be a very difficult situation into something very simple. We plan on painting the complete interior of our home in the future and wouldn't have anybody other than Certapro do the work! Again, comforting to know that if we need carpentry work done prior to the painting of the interior, they will coordinate it with their painters. Just a great company top to bottom with a great bunch of people. Wouldn't have anybody else do our painting or repairs. We highly recommend them."

"Very happy with the work. Bob built a smaller deck on the back of the house and a larger one on the front. The front deck includes a ramp as we have a friend who uses a wheelchair. Cannot wait for Judy to come over for a visit! Bob is easy to work with and the cost was just what I had in mind before I even started looking for someone to do it. High quality work and very easy to work with."

"The crew assigned to my house were thoughtful and helpful at explaining my different options. When having trouble explaining what I wanted they worked with me to craft a plan that was understandable. The work was good and didn’t break the bank."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

You don’t necessarily have to remove all the old paint before repainting your deck, but it’s best to remove as much as possible to ensure a smooth and long-lasting finish. Prioritize scraping off loose, peeling, or flaking paint, and sand down rough areas to create a smooth surface for the new paint to bond with.

The opposite is actually true: Wood stains tend to appear lighter when they’re fully dry. However, stains may darken as they weather and oxidize with age. Stains might also darken on surfaces left in direct sunlight, as UV rays can break down pigment particles and cause them to darken over time.

Two coats of stain are ideal for the best protection and aesthetic appeal. However, if your decking is made of particularly dense hardwood, you may only need one coat. If you want an intense color, two coats are ideal.

You’ll need to restrain your deck when you notice fading, cracking, peeling, or mold and mildew over a moderate to large area, or when it’s become especially difficult to clean. As for how often to stain a deck, plan to do it every two to three years or whenever you start to notice extended damage.

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.
