"We chose Beam Construction to replace our aging deck based largely on the strength of the reviews on Angie's List...and those reviews were spot on. Ermin Artukovic examined our deck, made some suggestions, then gave us a detailed estimate. He was pleasant and sincere, wanting to make sure we understood his plan for a new deck and how much it would cost. He and his crew showed up on time and were quietly competent and professional. They dismantled the old deck and built the new one in a single day. They cleaned up the debris and hauled it away. They even volunteered to trim some low-hanging branches from a tree in our yard. Replacing an old deck can be stressful. Ermin and his crew took the stress out of it. We are delighted with our new deck and with Beam Construction. We can heartily recommend them."

"Five stars for groovy Hughes. They did an excellent job repainting our living room, stair way, dining room and kitchen. The crew was fast, efficient and very tidy. The quality of work is top-notch and the color looks perfect. Great communication and a pleasure to work with. Will definitely hire them again."

"The communication with the company was excellent--they kept in touch with us about when the work would commence, what we needed to do to be ready, and about how long it would take. They helped with the selection of paint and recommendations for possible repair work that might need to be done. It rained one or two days in the middle of our project, and they stayed in touch about when work could begin again. They did an excellent job, cleaned up thoroughly, and the finished product looks wonderful."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Constant exposure to inclement weather conditions can damage your deck, causing it to fade, warp, or crack over time. Regular maintenance keeps it looking and performing its best. That means giving it a good cleaning and applying a quality sealant or wood treatment to help defend against moisture, sun damage, and everyday wear.

Aftercare includes routine cleaning, checking for water repellency, and promptly addressing any chips or peels, maintaining the deck's appearance and functionality.

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

Wood stain does go bad, but it will last in the can for between three and six years, provided you use proper storage techniques. Storing wood stain in open containers or in extremely low or high temperatures will cause your wood stain to become unusable much more quickly. Water- and latex-based wood stains typically last for just two to four years, while oil-based wood stains can last for three to six years.

The opposite is actually true: Wood stains tend to appear lighter when they’re fully dry. However, stains may darken as they weather and oxidize with age. Stains might also darken on surfaces left in direct sunlight, as UV rays can break down pigment particles and cause them to darken over time.
