"Good job; friendly, efficient crew. Moved a few things that I could not move. I now have a great looking floor with no sign of the cracks and spalls that the floor had."

"About the job: KITCHEN: Remove bulkhead, fix drywall, retexture & paint ceiling, install new light, paint, refurbish existing cupboards, build new cupboard above refrigerator, install new faucet, disposal, and dishwasher, new backsplash, new counters, new flooring. BATHROOM: Remove old tile, and install new tile. Mr. Ford is a skilled craftsman who takes pride in his work. From the estimate, to the final payment, he impressed me with his professionalism. He was here when he said he would be, and has the tools necessary to do the job right. Jonathan is very knowledgeable about his trade, making suggestions that elevated my original ideas. He was courteous, friendly, and conscientious about his work. He took the time to clean up the worksite daily. Jonathan does excellent work! He treated me fairly, was flexible, and stayed within my budget. I never felt pressured to upgrade. He was a pleasure to work with, and I have already spoken to him about completing my next project."

"Wow, what a great experience I had with Nathan with NK Carpentry yesterday afternoon! He arrived early to power wash 7 large outdoor Polywood pieces of furniture and an outdoor rug that were heavily covered with nicotine stains. He is very professional, yet friendly and approachable. He verified what I wanted done and got right to work. He finished in just a little over 2 hours and got about 99% of the stains off of all of the furniture…they look brand new! And then he wound up the hose and hung it back up; laid out the furniture pieces in the sun so they’d dry and made sure I was satisfied with his work before I paid him with a check, shook hands and said goodbye. I’d hire him in a minute to do other work! He’s a young, very hard worker; efficient; cleans up when he’s finished with the job; had a very fair price and is determined to be a quality, successful businessman! I was extremely impressed!"

Flooring Installation questions, answered by experts

A transition piece between carpet stairs and wood flooring isn't always necessary. A transition piece separates two types of flooring in between rooms and areas, like carpet and vinyl. Because the carpet on the stairs tucks into the seam, you can’t see the fringes, and there is no need to hide anything. However, you can use a stair cap if your stairs have a nose.

It’s a good idea to install a rug pad under the carpet for your stairs. To make the pad fit, you’ll need to cut one section for each stair tread that’s about one inch narrower than the stair runner so that it won’t be visible once the carpet is installed on top.

Yes, carpeted stairs are generally considered safer than stairs with hard surfaces like wood, vinyl, or tile. Carpet provides more traction, which helps reduce the chances of slips and falls, and its cushioning can lessen the severity of an injury if a fall does occur. Hard surfaces often lack the friction needed for a secure tread and can be quite slippery.

However, it's worth noting that some carpets can also be slick, particularly if they are brand new, dirty, or made from certain materials. If any stair surface feels too slippery, traction treads can be added to most materials to increase grip and improve safety.

Because cork flooring has a low-impact feel and is water-resistant, it is a good choice for kitchens. It makes standing to chop vegetables and stir soup for long periods of time feel much easier on your feet and legs. But keep in mind that spills can cause cork to swell if they sit for too long, so if you’re a messy home chef, keep plenty of towels nearby to keep your cork floors in good condition.

A stair runner can be cheaper than a carpet and will definitely save money over the cost of refinishing hardwood floors and stairs. The price depends, however, on the fabric and quality of the runner. A wool stair runner can be more expensive than an inexpensive polyester carpet and vice versa. Keep an eye on your budget, knowing that the higher quality the carpet and the carpet pad, the better the carpet will wear over time.
