"Akua and Rusty are professional, capable, trustworthy and excellent at what they do. We needed a large backyard area cleared of old chicken coops, construction debris and old machinery, sheds and plant material. They arrived promptly and immediately came up with a plan to maximize their time and resources. They are smart problem solvers working with patient and positive attitudes and were able to remove 22,000 lbs of waste/trash from the property in 3 days. The invoicing was clear and the price was fair. I highly recommend Po Brothers! They exceeded all expectations. I will absolutely call them again."

"Tausinga Hafoka has done a number of projects for me in the past. They typically do rock and masonry work, but about 20 years ago they installed some pavers for my home as well. I always have been impressed by the quality of the service. The workers are always on time and do good work."

"Cutting Edge was a great choice in taking care of yard clean up, mowing, tree trimming, and they even helped in cementing in my flag pole. They were efficient, reliable, and hard-working. Prices were fair and worth every dollar! The projects were done quickly and with a careful eye. If you want any landscaping work done on Maui, I highly recommend Cutting Edge."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Landscape edging is more DIYable than trenching. You can DIY your own digging projects, but proceed carefully and only with proper knowledge of the equipment and appropriate safety measures in place. Keep in mind the project's scope and estimate how long it will take you to do it on your own. While you can certainly save money by DIYing home improvement projects, you can’t exactly hide an unfinished—or worse, ruined— landscaping job from the neighbors. It’s always safer to call an excavation pro near you to get an estimate.

The time it takes to build a pool—and dig out the area—varies based on the pool size and type. A professional excavator will take between four and eight hours to dig a pool. The process will take longer if they encounter large boulders or tree roots. Keep in mind that this is a small part of the process in the long run. You will need between eight and 12 weeks to build a pool from start to finish, including the time to apply for permits.

Yes, trenchers can go through gravel. Gravel is made up of smaller, softer rocks that certain trenchers are able to cut through. Just be sure to use a rock wheel trencher or chain trencher, both of which are made to cut through rocky landscapes and gravel pathways without dulling the teeth or chain.

Whether you grind or dig up and remove your tree stump depends on your landscaping goals. Using a stump grinder leaves the root system in place for it to decompose over time, whereas digging up the tree stump removes the roots and the stump. Overall, stump grinding is a far simpler process since you won’t need to deal with the roots. Stump removal will make your yard look like a demolition site, but you’ll have an easier time replanting in the same place as your former tree.

To locate an underground downspout, you should start by identifying where the above ground gutter drains. Look for an entry point, such as a pipe or elbow leading into the ground. Follow the surface path for signs like depressions, landscaping disruptions, or wet areas after rain. You can use a metal detector or plumber’s snake to trace the pipe underground. For deeper pipes, a professional locator tool or camera inspection may be necessary. Visual markers or utility maps can also guide the search.
