"My back yard, on a 45 degree angled slope, was overgrown with brush at least twenty years old. Some branches were reaching over onto the second story of my house. The whole thing posed a fire hazard. Akua and Rusty cleared a “forest” worth of brush with hand-held tools. The clearance on either side of my house was not enough to allow large equipment. These two men worked hard and efficiently. They were on time and professional. Communication was excellent and the price was fair. All of this wood had to also be chipped and hauled away. When done, they left the project site clean as if they weren’t even there. I could not be more pleased with their service and I highly recommend this company."

"Cutting Edge was a great choice in taking care of yard clean up, mowing, tree trimming, and they even helped in cementing in my flag pole. They were efficient, reliable, and hard-working. Prices were fair and worth every dollar! The projects were done quickly and with a careful eye. If you want any landscaping work done on Maui, I highly recommend Cutting Edge."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Trenches are typically 12 to 24 inches deep and 8 inches wide. However, the required depth depends on the specific project and local ordinances. For example, a French drain may need to be 18 inches deep, while a water pipe might require a depth of 24 inches and a drainage pipe 36 inches. Your city or county may have specific regulations, so it's wise to consult with an excavation professional to determine the correct depth for your project.

The physical constraints of hand-drilling a well limit the depth you can achieve. Manually digging with picks and shovels may only lead to shallow wells of up to 60 feet in depth. To reach greater depths, you need more specialized equipment. The diameter of your well and the tools you’re using will determine how far down you can dig.

There are many ways to cut through roots when digging, especially if your trencher doesn’t seem to be removing the roots. First, use a shovel to expose the roots. Then, use gardening shears to clear out smaller roots or a reciprocating saw to remove larger plant roots. If you plan on keeping the plant, avoid cutting any roots over 2 inches thick.

Hard soil could be a sign of overly dry dirt, either from poor drainage or drought. It's important to test the nutrient levels, density, and drainage capacity of your soil to see if it's absorbing water properly. Begin by adding a light layer of water and observing how long the soil retains moisture. If you experience a good deal of runoff, you may need to aerate your lawn, apply a wetting agent, or hire a professional for a closer look.

Prior to excavation, you should prepare the dig site and call 311 before you sign anything.

To get your site ready for excavation, you should move anything in the area that isn’t affixed to the land. You can save money on the excavation by removing hardscaping, including walkways, decks, concrete patios, and paver patios.

Before you carry out any digging, you should call 311 to confirm that there are no utility lines running through your excavation site. Skipping this step could lead to severe injury and property damage if your excavator hits a water, sewage, or gas line.
