"These guys were consummate professionals. They went above and beyond what they were hired for. Not only did I hire them on Friday and they were at my property at 0800 on Monday morning, they finished the entire job by lunch on Tuesday. There was a small SNAFU, but Mark went out of his way to fix the problem ASAP. I would highly recommend these guys for your next job, they have brought new life into my 70 year old home. Mahalo guys!"

"Mark O'dell did a wonderful job on my DHHL clearing out approximately 3 acres of land filled with gun powder trees and California grass. He was quick to respond and coordinated his equipment before my departure back to the mainland. He was very professional and courteous to meet my requirements. A little pricey but worth every penny. I highly recommend Mark for future projects and look forward to working with him again."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Depending on the severity of the freeze and the method used, thawing frozen underground pipes can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Applying heat directly to the pipe using heat tape, infrared lamps, or hot water jetting can speed up the process. However, patience and careful monitoring are key to avoiding pipe damage.

How deep your septic system needs to be into the ground depends on several factors. In extremely cold environments, the tank needs to rest below the maximum frost line, which can be up to six or eight feet deep. The standard burying depth for most systems is between a few inches and four feet below ground level. Depth can also depend on the slope of the landscaping and other property variables.

Yes, an excavation company is the best option for land grading and yard leveling. General landscapers might be able to tackle these projects, but an excavation company will do a better job because they’re used to operating the necessary heavy machinery. Landscapers might opt to do the work manually, which takes much longer and could cost you more in labor fees. Finally, excavation companies will understand local regulations and know when you need permits to legalize the work, while a landscaper might not.

In most areas, you will need a permit for excavation work, even for projects that only involve grading or yard leveling. Permit requirements depend on your local government and the scope of the project, but they are especially common for significant digging or work that could affect utilities or public property. These permits help protect the local topography and prevent drainage issues. An experienced excavation company will typically know whether permits are needed and can often handle the process of pulling and closing them for you. You can also verify permit requirements by contacting your local building department and describing your project.

No, a ditch isn’t a trench. A ditch is an open, relatively shallow channel that’s carved out of the ground and used for drainage purposes. In contrast, a trench is a deeper excavation that’s entirely underground. Trenches have many uses, including gas lines, sewage systems, and electrical wiring. Unlike trenches, ditches don’t get filled back in with dirt after they’re dug.
