"I engaged Sean Canfield from Finishing Touch Hardwood Floors to refinish the wood floors in our living room, kitchen, and entryway following the installation of our new kitchen. Sean’s entire sales pitch to me involved promising a long list of features to his work, none of which were delivered – it was a con job pure and simple. Based on my experience – an experience I now realize others have lived through after reviewing Sean’s online reviews, I strongly advise anyone considering his services to run, not walk, away from this individual. Working with Sean has been nothing short of a nightmare. From the very beginning, Sean’s grand promises about the durability of his finish included assuring me that it was "dog-proof." He even went as far as providing numerous examples of satisfied clients with big dogs who had no issues. Fast forward, and our floors are a disaster. Sean left numerous holes and cracks in the floor that were supposed to be filled, uneven finish between the two rooms he was supposed to restore, chunks of material stuck on the floor in the finish he was using, and areas left completely untouched – the list of deficiencies is extensive. And NO, it's not from my dog Sean, it's from your sloppy work. He consistently blamed our dog for the problems, a stark contradiction to his initial claim that the finish could withstand the wear and tear of pets. The floors are a mess, and Sean's refusal to take responsibility is infuriating. It’s worth nothing that our second story hardwood, where Sean did not work, shows no scratch marks. Additionally, Sean's promise of meticulous protection for our new kitchen, walls, baseboards, and other home contents was grossly unfulfilled. Our kitchen cabinet base molding and walls are damaged, requiring a complete downstairs repaint due to sticky thick flooring material residue. Our kitchen wood needs sanding to address the gouges and scratches left by Sean. The project was riddled with delays, extending far beyond the promised two weeks to a month and counting. The pantry, a specified area in the agreement, was left completely untouched, and Sean had the audacity to claim he had "lightly sanded" and refinished it. When confronted with a list of deficiencies, Sean's true colors emerged. After I sent him a text with a detailed list of issues, Sean responded with profanity, name-calling, and hostile behavior. He finally came to the house and as we were pointing out all the obvious problems, he became belligerent, cursing at my fiancée and me, flipping us off in our home, walking out, slamming our glass front door, and causing a scene in front of our tenant and neighbors. His unprofessional behavior continued with recklessly driving off our property, peeling out onto the street, screeching his tires and causing even more of a scene. There are burnout marks on our driveway and on the street from his violent outburst. My lovely tenant just moved over from Maui after the fires, and she heard Sean screaming at us and thought of videoing him in case he damaged anything else on our property. We are still in shock as to how Sean responded in our home. As working professionals who have dealt with numerous contractors, we have never encountered someone as frightening, untrustworthy, and unprofessional as Sean Canfield. His dishonesty, lack of professionalism, and extreme temper are seriously on another level. Despite promises to address the issues with our floor, he failed to deliver or finish what we paid him $15,000 for. We are pursuing legal action to rectify the damage he has caused to our home and to recover our money for this substandard work. Avoid Finishing Touch Hardwood Floors at all costs."

Flooring Installation questions, answered by experts

Carpet installers use furniture sliders or blankets to protect your furniture during the installation process. They handle each piece with care to minimize the risk of damage. Additionally, they may employ techniques such as lifting and shifting furniture rather than dragging it across the floor to prevent scratches or other marks. If you have particularly delicate or heavy items that need to be moved, discuss special handling with the installers beforehand.

Yes, installing underlayment underneath the laminate flooring is necessary. The underlayment has many benefits like preventing water damage to your subfloors, insulating the floor for sound, and providing an even surface for the planks to sit on.

When you skip the underlayment, you can end up with serious issues, including water damage to your subfloors, noisy planks, and an uneven floor.

There are a few cleaning products that you should never use on carpets because you may accidentally ruin them. Do not use bleach, dish soap, laundry detergent, and abrasive cleaners on carpet. For more guidance on products to avoid, consult a local carpet cleaning company for expert advice.

Yes, marble floors do increase home values. In fact, if you install marble flooring in your home, you can expect to double your investment. Homebuyers love marble, like other types of stone flooring, because it’s timeless, beautiful, wears well, and is considered a luxury product. Marble is expensive to install, but if your house and location attract buyers looking for luxurious, upscale vibes, adding marble flooring can only raise your property value and give you a great return on your investment.

Many doorways feature two door jambs. These are installed on both sides of a doorway to prevent the door from swinging too far. Door jambs usually stop the door at 180 degrees when closed.  A doorway floor transition sits between the door jambs on the floor, helping to create a safer and more aesthetically pleasing transition from one flooring type to the next.
