"Excellent work. We purchased natural cherry cabinets in shaker style, with the panels made of solid wood rather than veneer. That is more difficult work, as each panel has to be constructed from several planks. Moreover, the clear finish would leave any flaws more visible. Simply put, the doors are beautiful--flawless in both construction and finish. They are similar in quality to custom cherry furniture we own."

"Very well. The slight dip in the kitchen looks better and the doors trued up. The slight sag still in the kitchen floor is because of the sub floor plywood which I didn't want to get in to. They leveled the joist by shimming the tops of several cinder block posts and installing a pair permanent of steel posts under a section of joist the previous owner had cut in two."

To build a standard size, six-panel door yourself, you’ll need four 2-foot by 6-foot boards, one 2-foot by 8-foot or 2-foot by 10-foot board, and a sheet of 3/4-inch, paint-grade plywood. The 2-foot by 6-foot boards will serve as your stiles, top rail, and horizontal and vertical mullions, and the wider board will serve as the bottom rail, which is usually wider than the other horizontal pieces. The plywood will serve as the panels, but you’ll need around five 1-foot by 6-foot boards to make your own panels if you want to stain the door rather than paint it.

If you’re installing a pocket door into an existing door opening, the new space will need to be twice the width of the existing door, plus an inch. You'll need to double that number if you’re adding dual pocket doors.

Standard door sizes aren’t one-size-fits-all, but there are common go-to dimensions. For exterior doors—like your front door—36 inches wide by 80 inches tall is typical, though you’ll see 30- or 32-inch widths too, especially in older homes. Interior doors vary more. Bedrooms and bathrooms often use 30- to 32-inch widths, and closet doors can be anything from slim singles to wide bi-folds. Check the package of your bifold door. The width shown is half an inch larger than the bifold set. This allows at least 1/4 inch between the side jamb and pivot. When installing the top track, saw the track down to leave approximately 1/6 inch on each end. This will ensure your bifold door folds and unfolds smoothly without getting stuck in the frame.

You should hire a licensed and insured door contractor with prior experience installing folding doors. Installing these doors is much more complex than installing a standard sliding door; don’t leave this work to a general handyperson or attempt to install it yourself.
