"Jon and Derek and their team from Nature’s Canvas recently helped me create and build a beautiful zen oasis for my 900 sq ft condominium terrace.  I shared my vision and inspiration with Jon designer Kim Cunningham from Roots by Design. They created a rendering,  we worked together to finalize the design and select the materials which included marble and wood-looking tile, artificial grass, garden sculptures and lighting. They delivered a beautifully finished product that gave me the elegant, yet zen look and feel I was hoping to achieve. Working with them was such a pleasure.  They were honest, communicative, creative, completed the work on time and as promised.  I could not be more pleased with our working relationship and my beautiful new oasis!"

"Ideal Landscaping owned by Mychael Bennett provided A1 service. He was knowledgeable of his trade, professional & very courteous. He paid attention to detail in trimming and clearing the area around some extremely overgrown hedges in my mom’s backyard and treated the back and front yards. My mom (who is on the picky side - lol) was very pleased and will be doing business with him in the future."

Patios questions, answered by experts

A screened-in porch requires maintenance to keep the screens clean and in good shape, and you may have to do some screen repair or replacement from time to time. A screen porch isn’t an all-season porch, so the weather can get in, including wind and rain.

Several types of porches are available to meet your needs and style preferences. Some common porch types include:

  • Porticos are essentially a roof over a walkway leading to the home's front entrance.

  • Sunrooms are closed-in porches that are an extension of the house with glass or plastic panels that allow optimal sunlight.

  • Wraparound porches extend around the entire home, or at least the front and one side, and offer multiple entrances to the house.

  • Back porches are an extension of the home’s floor into the outdoors. These offer more protection and privacy than a deck.

Yes, but ensuring the deck has a solid foundation with adequate footings is critical before building, as the weight of a sunroom will put significant pressure on the structure below. Even if your deck is properly constructed, it may not be able to handle the extra weight. While some basic, lightweight, prefabricated sunrooms can sit on a deck with a strong existing foundation without additional supports, in many cases, the foundation and joists will need reinforcement. It is always best to have a structural engineer perform an inspection to evaluate the deck's quality and structural integrity. A professional can help you decide if reinforcement is sufficient or if it's better to tear down the deck and start over.

In most parts of the U.S., adding a screened-in porch requires a building permit. Since this type of project often involves structural work and changes to your home’s footprint, homeowners should adhere to local guidelines. That said, permit rules can vary widely depending on where you live and how extensive the project is. Before you start sketching out plans or ordering materials, check in with your city or county’s building department to avoid headaches, fines, and potential structural issues down the line.

Increases living space and adds value to the home through enhanced utility.
