Small jobs welcome

"Iâ m so glad I hired Oak Street to stain my deck and touch up/paint the siding on the back of my house. Dallas did an amazing job! I appreciated his attention to detail, keeping me informed about when he would be on site and he finished the job in time expected. He left no trace other than a beautiful deck and great looking paint job."

"Ivan was great to work with. He understood what we needed and helped the crews understand whenever there was an issue. We began with the siding and deck/stairs. The stairs needed some adjustments to be done to our satisfaction. The crew was accommodating to our changes, though there was a bit of a language barrier. We would be happy to use Make a Choice again if needed"

"Mr. Giles did an incredible job on our home. He built us a brand new deck that’s one of the sturdiest, most impressive additions we’ve made in years — true craftsmanship and pride in his work. He also put together a closet system for my wife and painted the walls and closet with an excellent design aesthetic. She’s thrilled with it. He showed up on time, communicated well, and worked efficiently. What sets Andre apart: he’s not a contractor trying to keep everything in-house. When a job needs extra hands, he brings in the right people to do it right. That honesty is hard to find. He’s worth every penny. We’re already planning to have him stain the deck and redo our basement next. I’m recommending him to family, including older relatives who need trustworthy work done."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Opt for an interior wood stain that is rated for your type of wood. Consider your personal style preferences as well as the overall use of the room when choosing a color. Remember, the color you see at the store may look different on your actual floors once applied. This is why if you have the chance, it’s helpful to test a few options on a scrap piece of wood in the room first. Once you narrow it down, you can test a small patch on an inconspicuous area in the room to see it on the actual floors.

Choosing the right product involves understanding deck material, desired finish, and local weather conditions. Opt for high-quality, weatherproof formulations ensuring long-term durability and appearance retention.

A properly applied coat of stain will last between 3 and 8 years, depending on your climate. If you live in a place where your fence experiences a lot of moisture or high heat, your stain will last for a shorter period than in more temperate conditions. We recommend reapplying stain every 3 to 5 years to keep your wood in good condition.

Choosing whether your deck should be lighter or darker than your house is a matter of personal preference, as there is no right or wrong answer. However, considering the pros and cons of each can help guide your decision. Darker colors are often chosen because they show less dirt, footprints, and marks from daily wear, making them easier to keep clean. On the other hand, lighter deck colors tend to stay cooler in the summer. From a design perspective, using a deck color that contrasts with your home's exterior can help make the deck a more defined and distinct feature. Consulting color theory can also make the process of choosing a complementary house and deck color combination easier.

Staining a deck with a rag is typically a better option than using a brush, as it helps the stain penetrate deeper into the wood. However, both brushes and rags are best reserved for detailed work because using these tools on an entire deck can require tediously crawling around on your hands and knees. A pad applicator, sprayer, or roller are preferred alternatives to applying stain over the majority of a deck. Use a rag for railings and other detailed work, and let the wood soak up as much of the stain as possible before wiping away drips or pools.
