Customers say: Quick response

"From start to finish LJIA masonry was first rate. They came and discussed what needed to be done, provided a detailed quote and kept us up to date on starting times and what they needed from us to have the materials needed. The crew arrived on time (a little early actually) started promptly, worked efficiently and could not have been more courteous and respectful of our property. The attention to detail was exemplary. When finished, the crew went above and beyond in the clean up. Highly recommended."

"Mark with MC Exterior Walls was timely in responding and stayed in touch letting me know the project timeline. He was fair in cost and he did excellent work. His team and himself repaired a late 1970's stone wood burning chimney that had acquired leaks due to old grout around the exposed stone. They grounded out the old grout around the stone and replaced with new waterproofing grout, pressure washed the stones and then sealed the exposed exterior. I also had them make and add a custom-made chimney cap that I designed and it is exactly what I wanted and just tops off the look of the chimney. I would highly recommend Mark and MC Exterior Walls to anyone that needs stone, grout, chimney repair. I can't say enough on how happy I am with the quality of the work and no more leaks!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Masonry is an umbrella term that involves adhering individual building materials together using an adhesive, so many different things are considered masonry. These include constructing stone or brick walls or facades, installing stucco siding, installing backsplashes or tile floors, and even installing glass block windows, in some cases. Masonry materials include natural stone, clay bricks, concrete bricks, glass blocks, and tiles.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) recommends placing a mailbox 6 inches to 8 inches back from the curb. If your lot is unusual, speak with town authorities or the local post office to determine the correct placement.

It’s called cobblestone because it’s made of stones that are “cobbed” together. A cob is a term that refers to rounded lumps. Originally, cobblestone streets were made from pebbles and stones gathered from riverbeds that had been rounded over time by the passage of water. The term has nothing to do with a cobbler, which is the term for someone who makes and fixes shoes.

Yes, but used or reclaimed bricks can be more brittle, cracked, or uneven than new bricks, so they’re harder to cut cleanly by hand. For that reason, you should take extra care when scoring and striking, and expect a higher chance of breakage. If a brick feels especially fragile, score deeper before attempting to split it.

Yes, concrete is significantly stronger than masonry, especially if the concrete pour includes reinforcements, like steel rebar. Concrete is a uniform material that can withstand compression, sheer force, and tensile force as long as it’s reinforced. Masonry involves the use of mortar or grout to connect individual building materials, like brick, stone, or tile. Mortar and grout are also reasonably strong and resist compression well, but they don’t come close to the strength of poured concrete.
