"The contracted the work off to a third party. Jon took longer than expected. The windows was installed pretty good from the looks. Communication could have been better with knowing the job will take longer and what types of trims I wanted for the windows. As the contractor that was hired for this job by this company. Did a good job with putting up decent trim. As for the new windows they look great. I purchased the myself and hired sentri homes to install them. I will need to have a my siding on my house redone to be closer to the new windows so the gaps are not so obvious. That was not expected at first. But from old storm windows and not knowing how they were put in originally. There was some unknown things that was learned from the job being completed. I will have the siding of the house slightly done to match really good for what I wanted later on. My only concern is better communication with sentri homes. Overall they were great when I did talk to them."

"Fantastic. Apologies for the short review, Angie's List did not submit my last 3 reviews and I do not want to go through the process of writing another full review. Suffice it to say, G&D was phenomenal and I would hire them again in a heartbeat."

"They came out to the house on time as promised and checked out the chimney. Later that day they emailed me a quote to tear out the old siding, install new hardi and paint. The quote was very reasonable. However, the next day I was talking with a neighbor who had the same problem with his chimney and he made the point that he had the chase covered in sheathing (plywood) and had the corner boards replaced with hardi as well. (Our homes were built in 1993 and I guess covering the framing with sheathing was not required). So, I sent a note to JMR asking for an updated quote to include the sheathing (plywood, tyvek wrap and replacing the corner boards with Hardi). However, they did not get back to until this week and I already brought in someone else to reside the chimney due to the whole from the wood peckers. But I would definitely consider JMR in the future as I'm considering residing the rest of the house in the near future."

"Loved my experience with Harvest. Quick, professional service and friendly staff. Highly recommend! I had 3 scheduled quotes from other companies (the only ones to call back and show up). These guys answer the phone, show up on time and the Crew did tear down and new install in TWO days. Couldn’t be happier with the quality. Our fence is beautiful. The installation did a wonderful job!"

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Yes, a home builder or contractor should have the proper licensing and insurance. Licensing requirements vary by state and municipality, but most states mandate that a builder holds at least a general contractor’s license. For specialized work such as plumbing, electrical, roofing, or sewage systems, individual licenses may be required, in which case the builder may subcontract the work. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to review your local guidelines and confirm a builder's credentials. As you browse professionals, you can also look for the “Angi Certified” badge. This indicates the business meets our certification standards, which include passing a criminal background check, holding applicable state and local licenses, and maintaining an average rating of 3.0 or better.

The early stages of building a house are harder than the later stages; laying the foundation and framing the house are two of the most challenging steps. However, it varies for everyone. Some people have difficulty installing HVAC, plumbing, and electricity, while others find it harder to plan the house and secure the necessary permits.

Ranch and colonial-style homes are often the most affordable to build. They have a common layout with available designs that are easy to adjust in simple ways without having to spend too much on a structural engineer or architect. Both types of homes' symmetry, simple roofs, and often one or two-story plans mean they often fall in the $150 to $200 square-foot range, putting them right around average.

Yes, you can finance cottage construction through several options. Construction loans provide funds in stages as work progresses, while home equity loans or lines of credit are available if you have existing property. Some lenders offer a combined construction and permanent mortgage. Always review loan terms and payment milestones before committing.

It is a good idea to check in with your local city and state regulations before committing to building a shipping container home no matter where you live. This concept is pretty new across the country, and many places won’t let you build one.

The International Code Council (ICC) offers guidelines for home builders on the safe use of ISO intermodal shipping containers repurposed as building components, which can be helpful to review when planning or designing a shipping container home.
