"Extensive knowledge about roofing systems and trouble shooting hard to find roofing problems. The previous homeowner used an inferior roofing company five years ago to replace the roof on this house. In addition to finding and fixing several roof leaks, Zoe's inspected the entire roof and recommended three very inexpensive preventive maintenance repairs to head off future problems. Zoe's reminds me of companies from years gone by that were manned with true professionals and craftsman. Zoe's actually strives to be the best roofers they can be. They actually like being roofers. I will only use Zoe's for all my future roofing needs. You should too."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can replace a skylight without changing the entire roof—if the roof is in good shape. First, you need to make sure the roof around the skylight is intact and free of damage. Quality installation is crucial to prevent leaks, including replacing the flashing, which seals the skylight to the roof. While replacing the skylight alone is doable, it can make sense to replace both at once to streamline the work, coordinate the warranties, and reduce the risk of future leaks. If you’re unsure, reach out to a professional for help in deciding the best approach.

An improperly installed skylight could potentially impact your roof's warranty. This happens because roofing penetration is necessary during skylight installation. Check your warranty information to verify. In most cases, having skylights professionally installed with proof that flashing is being done to specifications can be enough to preserve your roof's warranty.

A skylight's ability to withstand hail depends on factors like material quality and thickness. Impact-resistant options, such as tempered or laminated glass, fare better against hail compared to standard glass. Proper installation and regular maintenance also contribute to their resilience. While smaller hailstones may not pose a significant threat, larger ones can cause damage. Consider skylight protection methods like covers or screens in hail-prone areas to enhance durability and minimize potential harm.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

The most popular treatment for a skylight is skylight shades. There are five primary types: manual, motorized, blackout, cellular//honeycomb, and Venetian. Motorized skylight shades are the most convenient, especially for skylights that are higher up, but manual shades are the most cost-effective treatments. Cellular/honeycomb shades are a perfect option for anyone who wants energy efficiency and an attractive look.
