"Very well. For starters, Mark drew up a beautiful binder with detailed descriptions and pictures of our new yard. He had pavers installed on our driveway and a paver sidewalk leading to the lanai. Then, he and his staff (Ryan, Bruce, and Dion) proceeded to make our yard absolutely lovely. We highly recommend Mark and Garden Traditions."

Owners Mike and Marta Garland are a design-build team offering complete landscape and construction projects. Marta Garland is a licensed landscape architect, and Mike garland is a structural masonry contractor. We start each project with a no obligation meeting to discuss ideas for your project and will quote costs before we proceed with the design. Marta prepares a 3-D design of your project so you can see it before it is built. We obtain necessary permits, and once we proceed with the work, the owners are on your job every day. We do much of the work ourselves, and have a team of workers and trades people as needed to complete your project.

John Strauss Associates is a small Design/Build firm with landscape architectural emphasis. How this translates is that we survive primarily as a contractor--our emphasis is on building all of our projects--not exclusively designing them. We also work with other landscape architects and designers and their clients who may be more specialized as planners or planting contractors. In all instances, however, we approach each project as landscape architects as we attend to construction detailing, circulation patterns, the integration of "floor, wall, and ceiling" for outdoor spaces, and the augmentation of appropriate plant materials. The majority of our work is in the construction arena which includes any type of outdoor construction project, grading, elaborate corrective or preventative drainage features, pavings, water features, etc.--truly any function that is incorporated into residential garden design. This is not exclusive of commercial work. None-the-less, our major market is with the residential customer, as our projects are certainly more intimate, personal, and detailed. Our experience in the Atlanta market for the past 16 years has shown us that the residential customer tends to be where these skills are most appropriately executed.

Fountains questions, answered by experts

Yes, natural pools can get algae since they use the same filtration processes as lakes or streams. However, you can reduce the risk of algae by adding more algae-fighting plants and not installing your natural swimming pool in direct sunlight, as it promotes algae growth.

Even if you empty your pond before the winter, there’s a good chance it will refill naturally. It’s ideal in most cases, then, to leave water in your pond and winterize it instead. This method will prevent ice damage and protect wildlife. Plus, it’ll lessen the steps required to reopen your pond in the spring.

Small ponds can be drained and filled in about a day. Larger ponds will take two or three days for professional removal.

One reason you may want to fill in your pond is the cost of maintenance. Pond cleaning may cost about $1,000 for an annual cleanup, or monthly visits may cost $75 to $100 per visit. If you don’t want to spend that much per year on pond upkeep, you may consider filling in your pond.

Although we often equate bodies of water with pesky mosquitoes, you don’t have to worry about them in your natural swimming pool. This is because mosquitoes are attracted to bodies of standing water. Your natural pool, on the other hand, has consistently moving water, thanks to the pump that runs all year long.
