"Element Repair and Remodeling is a excellent company . His work is perfection. The carport was so great, that we hired him to fix our insulated door and our railings at both doors, that were destroyed during hurricane Ian. I would hire Element Repair and Remodeling again for any large or small projects. Reasonable prices and very honest and reputable."

"James gave a free estimate for patching the roof where several roof vents were no longer in use. The work was performed the following day and it looks great. Another contractor just wanted to sell us a new roof which was clearly over repair. We also got an estimate for sealing a section of flat roof and ended up getting that work done as well. The crew was on time and efficient for both jobs. I would highly recommend them to family, friends, and others looking for roof repair."

"Jameson went over several alternative approaches with us. He bought and delivered all the materials necessary. He scheduled the job quickly and was at the site on time. Jameson worked expertly and made significant progress each day. His estimate on the time necessary to complete the job was spot on. We were both impressed with Jameson's craftsmanship. He cleaned up the project area beautifully. We are thrilled with our newly repaired deck.We hired him immediately for our next job."

"Although I was not able to hire this company because they were booked well into the next month and I needed the service done immediately, I was so impressed by Brendon's excellent customer service I will definitely hire him for my next job without question. He called me back the same day and apologized for not being able to accommodate my next day request. He then left a detailed message answering every question and concern I had left in my voicemail to him. He offered suggestions on what the job should entail, the average going rate and tips on how to prevent the issue with my pool deck pavers in the future. I highly recommend him for his professionalism, knowledge and helpfulness. Based on his reviews and booked schedule I'm sure his work is excellent too!"

"We needed some help on making some repairs on our 120 year old homestead house. Due to the age and historical interest of the house we are very careful (over protective) who we hired to work on the house. Lamont did a great job. He really understood what we wanted done. He also understood what could and what should not be done. The best reference we can give him is the fact we will be hiring him again and have recommended him to our friends. Finding a good handyman is hard, so glad we found Lamont."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

The average cost to professionally clean or pressure wash a deck is around $150, with prices typically ranging from $100 to $600. Several factors influence the final price, including the deck's size, material, condition, and how long it has been since its last cleaning. For a smaller deck of about 300 square feet, you might pay around $100. For a larger deck of 1,000 square feet or more, the cost could be closer to $300 to $400. Decks that are very dirty or haven't been cleaned in years may require more time and special detergents, which will increase the price. The deck's material also plays a role. Wood decks often cost more to clean because they require a gentle power washing technique to avoid damage. Composite decks are typically less expensive to clean, and cleaning a metal deck may cost around $100.

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Rot loves moisture, so deck rot typically impacts the parts of a board that stay wet. This includes the underside of boards, in addition to support posts and joists. However, any part of a board can rot, given the right conditions.

Whether composite decking is better than wood depends on your priorities, especially regarding budget and maintenance. Composite decking offers superior longevity (30 to 50 years) and durability, and it is low-maintenance, requiring no sanding, staining, or sealing. In contrast, wood decks typically last 10 to 30 years and need refinishing every few years. While the upfront cost of composite is higher than wood, the reduced maintenance can lead to long-term savings. If a lower initial cost is the primary factor, wood is the more affordable choice.

Deck stairs should have at least three stringers rather than two. The recommended minimum width for stairs is 36 inches, and the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors recommends at least three cut stringers to provide sufficient support on wood decking stairs of this width. Generally, stringers should be a maximum of 16 inches apart for wood decking and 12 inches apart for more flexible composite decking.
