"We used Superior a few times in the past to paint the interiors of homes and were very pleased. When the time came to paint the exterior of our home, we obtained three quotes. Superior's bid, while not the lowest, promised the best value... and they delivered. Their work on the exterior of our home was great. The teams were punctual, friendly, professional, and Gerard kept in touch to manage expectations. They also stripped the front door and re-stained it. I thought the door looked good before; I had no idea it had so much potential. The gentleman who worked on the front door explained the door was previously painted to look like wood grain. He brought out the door's true grain. We couldn't be more delighted."

"VIP painted my house about a year after I moved in. They did a nice job helping me select colors and got the work done promptly after agreeing to take the job. The test of a paint job is not the day after the painters are done, but after it's had some weather exposure. A year after the work was completed the paint job still looked fresh and new, so I would use VIP again."

"Mr. and Mrs. Williams did a fantastic job. I am extremely pleased. They not only washed the deck, they did the back of the house, a wooden planter, the lattice work, and the stone walkway! It looks just absolutely beautiful and they haven't even sealed it yet. It has to dry for a couple of days. I can't wait until they seal it as well. Based on what I've seen so far, they will be my go-to people for any job like this. They are very professional and friendly and very reasonably priced. 5 stars for sure."

"Jeffrey came by himself when he said he would and went right to work. It took a few days but he got the wallpaper off and did not damage anything in the kitchen while working. He had to mud one area so it took a couple of days to paint the walls. He paints quickly and professionally and cleans up as he goes. Jeffrey applied two coats of paint with the gallon I had already purchased. I found very few paint drops and most were tiny. He is the neatest painter I have ever used. I always expect some mess from construction, but his was minor. He caulked the counters and then trimmed them out again with paint. Even his cleanup was neat. I am very pleased with everything he did and highly recommend him. I plan to use him for pressure washing and to re-stain and paint my front door."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Whether you can paint over your existing paint depends on what’s on there. Most of the time, you’ll want to sand down or scrape off the paint that’s currently coating your surface. Epoxy paint, for example, won’t let new paint stick to the surface. Latex paint is more forgiving and will accept a new coat, but a primer is recommended if you’re switching colors.

Painting a damaged pool deck is not recommended if the substrate is crumbling, cracking, spalling, or otherwise actively deteriorating. Continuing deterioration will result in the paint also delaminating or flaking off the damaged surface. Minor damage such as chips or hairline cracks that are not actively deteriorating can often be repaired enough to paint over. A damaged pool deck with a lot of cracking and deterioration should be replaced for best results.

Generally, these steps are included in exterior house painting:

  • Prepping and protecting the areas not being painted

  • Scraping away loose paint

  • Cleaning off dirt, grease, and debris

  • Caulking gaps and openings

  • Priming with a quality paint primer

  • Painting the prepared areas, including trim and accents with chosen paint finish

  • Adding a second coat

  • Cleaning up the site and disposing of tape, plastic, and drop cloths

Choosing whether your deck should be lighter or darker than your house is a matter of personal preference, as there is no right or wrong answer. However, considering the pros and cons of each can help guide your decision. Darker colors are often chosen because they show less dirt, footprints, and marks from daily wear, making them easier to keep clean. On the other hand, lighter deck colors tend to stay cooler in the summer. From a design perspective, using a deck color that contrasts with your home's exterior can help make the deck a more defined and distinct feature. Consulting color theory can also make the process of choosing a complementary house and deck color combination easier.

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.
