The original request in writing by e-mail and in a sketch of the yard requested "tipping" of the trees (trimming of the smaller branches) before they leafed out. When the price quote was delayed and the work date was rescheduled by the company, a further delay, I should have cancelled. Lesson learned. The result was a misunderstanding between us both that was uncomfortable for us both. By the time the crew of two men arrived the trees had leafed out. When the crew showed up they did not have a ladder (and used mine, not a problem). The crew was super professional and experienced when we talked about plants. They suggested that the trees not be "tipped" because the trees had leafed out (sensible) and that is where my experience took a right turn; they did shape the trees using a trimmer on an extension pole. I called the owner as this change was being made - to let him know (from my perspective the scope of work was reduced and the bid would be adjusted). The owner sounded annoyed and finally said if the crew left early we could talk again. The crew left without saying good bye (I was home) and I did not get to tip them. We did talk again and I asked about the invoice in an e-mail and then talked again with the owner. I did not understand why the invoice remained the same, given the change in the scope of work. I also did not know why the charge was $50 per 19 hours for a day's work. Then the owner let me know that the hours were "man hours not crew hours." This was not in the quote and I did not know to ask in advance; the owner let me know - very kindly - that he would specify in the future So the dissatisfaction came from the interactions and the lack of explanation when the work changed. Who shows up to a trees tipping or even trimming - job without a ladder? Then the tipping was not done given that the trees had leafed out. I would chalk this up to misunderstandings - I do believe the rest of the job was well-done. Both of us, I believe, had uncomfortable interactions."
