Small jobs welcome

"My house entry door had long-standing wood rot in several places. I decided I'd better get a professional to fix that. I called Scott Purvis based on his homeadvisor.com ratings. Scott came over right away, looked at the door and made some suggestions as to how he would fix the door. I liked the plan, and hired him. Scott's work was excellent, he kept me advised all along the way and I am very pleased with the door as it is now."

"K&R did a great job, on time. I will definitely be using them again! They contacted me quickly to set up a time to review my yard, and gave me a very competitive quote for the work they did. The cleanup looks really professional."

"Very Well, they went beyond what i was expecting and did a wonderful job, The guys were very polite and explained every step as things went along. The wrought iron furniture and wooden rocker (over 100 yrs old - made by my Granddad) all look like new, The even shop vac the porch and garage to get all the saw dust removed, cleaned up all the scrapes and trash, They left everything cleaned up and looking like a show room. Todd's and Ends prices were fair and I would certianly recommend them"

"I've used Dee for several interior and exterior jobs. I admired that he was a young entrepreneur but most importantly he took pride in his work!! He works in a timely manner, honest, and excited about expanding his business. He does a great job!! I respect quality. For example he took a set of 30 yr old brick steps that were black and restored them to brand new quality."

"Everything went very well, however it did take a little longer than expected , but Jeff did an excellent job  considering the bathrooms were originally constructed in 1976. Bill Beam did a great job of staining the decks and repainting the bathroom. Jeff did an excellent job of laying the tile for tub and shower."

"Jeff from Razor’s Painting contacted us promptly, came by within just a few days, gave a quite reasonable estimate, and was able to start the project within just a day or two. He finished much more quickly than we expected and did a good job. He was professional, courteous, and honest. He guaranteed his work for one year; we realized after the fact that there were a couple of quick touch-ups we needed, and he returned promptly and completed those minor touch-ups quickly. He did an excellent job overall, and we were very pleased. We would happily hire him again!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can build a pool deck yourself, but it takes precision, a lot of time, and many specific tools. You’ll need to create a deck plan, be careful with measurements, cut each piece of wood, secure the pieces properly, and ensure the deck meets building codes. Building a deck around a pool is a rewarding DIY, but it’s time- and labor-intensive, so thoughtfully consider your abilities and the time you have before embarking on this DIY.

You can nail or screw composite decking, but 3-inch decking screws are the better fastener choice. Unlike nails, decking screws won’t back out of the composite material over time. There’s also little danger of splitting composite material when driving screws, so you don’t need to pre-drill holes unless otherwise recommended by your decking manufacturer.

Generally, a patio is more accessible than a standard deck because patios are constructed at ground level. However, decks can be made accessible by adding a wheelchair-accessible ramp, a vertical lift, or a stair lift along the entry. An ADA-compliant deck ramp costs about $3,000 on average. The additional investment will provide a much friendlier experience for your guests with movement impairments.

The best time to paint your deck is when temperatures are neither too cold (below 60 degrees) nor too hot (above 85 degrees). Always paint your deck when there’s no risk of rain. For fast-drying paint like acrylic or latex, ensure your deck can dry for at least four hours. Oil-based paints take longer to dry and may require 48 hours to completely cure.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.
