"Lewis was fantastic.   Not only did he beat the other quotes I received by several hundred dollars, he did a great job too.  I wasn't even sure what to do with the ceilings after scraping off the popcorn texture, but Lewis explained everything to me and gave me a beautiful ceiling.  Thanks Lewsi!!

"Micki Hawkins is the sassiest and best painter you will ever hire. Guaranteed. Her work shows her dedication to quality work. She took my flat ceilings and added incredible knockdown texture, applied paint and then proceeded to paint the majority of my house. Not only did she do an incredible job, she was also so much fun! She was honest about when she saw something she didn't like -if it didn't meet her standards, she fixed it. She also acknowledged that there were going to be spots that I didn't like that needed to be reviewed and retouched, so she gave me a roll of blue tape and had me mark the house where it needed extra attention. This is above and beyond what I've ever experienced with painters. And the thing about painting is, you can always paint yourself -it's not that hard, but it certainly is daunting when you have 1500+ square feet to do with a roller, pan and a brush. Trust Micki to do it for you and do it right. I cannot thank her enough!!"

"We called for an estimate, Brad came out the next day. The quote was very resonable. They did our flooring, painted our kitchen, installed all new cabinets, and quartz tops. We are very happy with our new kitchen remodel. We highly recommend Affordable Cabinets!"

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

Popcorn ceilings have fallen out of popularity due to their outdated appearance, difficult maintenance, and potential health risks. Ceilings installed before the 1990s may contain asbestos, which poses a serious health hazard if disturbed. As design trends have shifted towards sleeker, more modern finishes, many homeowners now favor smoother ceilings that offer a cleaner look and easier upkeep.

However, popcorn ceilings do offer some benefits, such as acoustic dampening and the ability to hide imperfections. Some people also appreciate their retro charm or find them to be a cost-effective option. Ultimately, whether a popcorn ceiling is 'bad' depends on personal preference, safety concerns, and the overall aesthetic of the home.

Yes, you can cover a popcorn ceiling, which is often more cost-effective and easier than scraping it off. Common methods include using ceiling-grade drywall, applying a skim coat, or installing beadboard panels to create a smooth, updated finish. Covering the ceiling can also protect you from asbestos exposure if the material contains it. However, it's important to note that this method only seals off the asbestos and does not eliminate it, which could be a concern for future renovations or home resale. If you suspect your ceiling contains asbestos, it's best to hire a local asbestos abatement company to test the material and manage its safe removal.

Popcorn ceilings can be relatively easy to keep clean with regular maintenance. Avoid exposing it to smoke if possible—popcorn ceilings tend to collect stains from smoke, including those from cigarettes or cooking. With proper care, you can clean your popcorn ceiling anywhere from every six months to a year—or as needed.

The easiest way to remove texture from walls is the soak-and-scrape method. You’ll need to spray a section of the wall with water and let the water soak in and soften the texture. Then, you need to scrape the texture off using a drywall taping knife. This method works best with unpainted walls since paint prevents water from saturating the textured joint compound.

While you should consult with a ceiling professional for larger cracks, especially if you’re not sure what’s causing your ceiling to crack, you can certainly try to repair small cracks on your own. If you’re up for the task, here’s how to repair ceiling cracks for $150 or less.
