There are many ways to cut through roots when digging, especially if your trencher doesn’t seem to be removing the roots. First, use a shovel to expose the roots. Bleach can potentially kill some types of delicate ornamental trees, but for the most part, it will only kill the foliage it comes in contact with. Applying bleach is not an effective method of killing a tree. A better option is to use an herbicide, which is a chemical compound designed to effectively kill a tree. 

For small trees, tree removal should take just a couple of hours to complete. Assume that a mid-sized tree will take between four and eight hours, depending on the extent of the equipment required and the health of the tree. Remember to add up to two hours for stump removal. Larger trees could take as long as one or two working days, about eight hours each.

The main disadvantage of stump grinding is that it requires use of heavy and dangerous machinery, meaning you should hire a professional to tackle it, increasing the removal cost. Another drawback of stump grinding is that it can cause root decay in the root system left behind. The remaining wood may develop this type of decay, making it difficult to replant a new tree or plant in that spot in the future.
