The work went terrific. I think they did underestimate the work and instead of one week, it took almost two weeks to complete. They never flinched and worked through it in the August heat and completed the job perfectly. The best part of the project was that with the reflective metal and the insulation barrier dropped my attic temperature from about 140 degrees in the summer to about 102 degrees. It is hard to estimate the energy savings, but I did seem to see a drop in my electric bills. I did see a huge drop in my insurance. The original roof on my 22 year old house was causing me to use Florida Citizens Insurance of last resort and I was paying about $3800/year. After the roof replacement I was able to look around and get a new insurance company with a rate of $1900/year (HALF!). Some of that difference is due to the age of my original roof jacking up my rate, but the wind mitigation changes performed and documented by Frank contributed in a big way! I'm 55 years old. If I stay in this house the rest of my life I won't have to replace this roof again! I also fully believe that this roof adds value to the house too. For this reason, while the roof costs much more than a standard shingle roof (maybe double in my case because of lots of extras), I definitely feel it was worth the investment. (Note that I checked that that the price was perfect in the review. It was painful paying that much, but if you want the best then you need to evaluate the price versus the benefit. In the end I think it was an investment that will last and pay back. I don't think you can say the same about asphalt shingles.)

One note to those that are planning on taking the reflective roof tax break (if it is still available) - note that the tax code specifies that the metal must be coated with an approved heat reflective color and Galvalume does not qualify. (This was not a problem for me because I did some research before hand, but you need to know about this if you were planning on using that tax break.)

Thanks to Frank and his team for excellent and professional quality work! I don't usually give perfect reviews, but in this case they deserve it.

"Roberto was the technician and he was very professional, polite, and personable. He inspected the rest of our system and told us things that needed to be changed or repaired. He showed me pictures of everything. Everything he told me about was accurate. He quoted me a price for R38 insulation , Some of our ducts were plastic and he recommended them to be changed. I agreed completely and didn't know they were plastic. I would have had them done the work but I had no price comparisons to make and besides I didn't have the money right then. So he just finished the vent cleaning and left his card. He did a great job on the vent cleaning and was happy with the work."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

For a DIY solution to protect an outdoor faucet from freezing, you can craft a cover using spare rags, a durable plastic bag, and duct tape. However, be aware that this method may not be as effective as a store-bought cover. Fabric like rags or old towels can absorb water, which could freeze and cause problems. While a DIY cover can work as a temporary stopgap, a proper outdoor faucet cover is inexpensive (often $5 or less), easy to install, and readily available, making it the recommended long-term solution.

When temperatures are too cold, it can keep ice from melting, and products like ice melt and rock salt are ineffective. Water turns to ice in temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice melts on its own when temperatures reach above 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ice melt loses effectiveness in temperatures below -25 degrees Fahrenheit, and rock salt works in temperatures 5 degrees Fahrenheit and warmer.

Excluding carpet, strand-woven bamboo provides excellent underfoot heat. Laminate flooring is also good for insulation and preventing cold feet in the winter. Bamboo tends to work better in climates that have more consistent temperatures, while laminate does a better job at insulating floors in homes that experience more extreme temperature changes, such as the deciduous climates of the northeastern U.S.

While insulation is required for all exterior walls in a house, it is not typically required for interior walls. Local and state building codes mandate that new construction homes have adequate insulation in exterior walls and ceilings to suit the local climate.

However, there are several benefits to adding insulation to interior walls. It is excellent for sound-dampening between rooms and can help with temperature control by maintaining a regulated temperature in specific rooms and lowering heat transfer between adjacent areas. Insulating interior walls can also contribute to the overall energy efficiency of your home.

The best type of insulation for your home depends on your specific needs, climate, and the area you are insulating. For new construction, structural insulated panels are a highly energy-efficient option that is easy to install during the building process. In very warm climates, reflective insulation can be a cost-effective choice. For cold climates, fiberglass is an excellent option due to its high R-value and resistance to settling over time. Spray foam works well in humid environments because of its moisture-resistant properties. For standard attics, loose-fill, spray foam, or blown-in insulation are all suitable options.
