"Simply put, Alex Williamson and his team are the best. Professional, capable, skilled, proficient, responsive, easy to communicate with, caring, delivers on promises, flexible, follows up -- where's my Thesaurus when I need it to look up more superlatives to describe the positive experience I had with Alex. He and his team expertly pressure washed the house and pool deck, painted the house/trim, repaired some soffit, and even pulled some unneeded cable from the exterior of the house at the last minute -- all for a very fair and competitive price. Alex, if you're reading this, as soon as I save a little more money for the next few projects I'm planning, you can count on the fact you will be the first one I call. Your business card is safely stored and handy when I need it."

"As I was able to have it done, John Cox completely renovated the interior of my home. He started by re-doing a bathroom project where I had been ripped off. I had not done my due diligence. John saved the day. The bathroom now looks like a spa. I called him back to do various projects. Ultimately, he gutted and changed the footprint of the kitchen. It is gorgeous. He gutted another bathroom and built crown molding throughout the house. The latest project was replacing carpeting, old slate, old tile and damaged laminate. I now have beautiful barn board tile planks throughout. The workmanship is impeccable and the cost was very reasonable. Not only is John a talented craftsman, he is a principled person. He always made sure any leftover materials were returned to the vendor, so I would receive a credit. Who does that?"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Unless you’re using a 2-in-1 formula or painting over an existing coat of paint, it pays to apply a coat of primer ahead of your new paint. Decks see a lot of footfall and exposure to extreme and sudden temperature changes and moisture levels. The primer promotes better paint adhesion, moisture repellency, and a smoother finish, which means you’ll often need fewer coats of paint.

Costs depend on coating type, labor, site preparation, and required finishes.

You should seal your deck every one to two years, but you’ll also need to clean and repair your wood deck throughout the seasons. You may want to hire a local house cleaning service to sweep and clean the deck thoroughly. These cleaning services cost around $50 per hour.

Inspect your deck at least once a year, and if you notice any damage or rot, expect to spend about $10 to $50 for simple DIY fixes or about $2,000 for professional repairs on more extensive damage.

Deciding whether to stain or paint a pool deck depends on your budget, desired look, and the deck's material. Both options can work. Paint offers a wider variety of color options, provides excellent water resistance, and can last longer. However, it requires a primer and can eventually fade or peel. Stain is often cheaper, easier to apply, and penetrates the wood for a more natural look and longer-lasting finish. It also has great water resistance. The downsides are fewer color options and the need for a sealant. The choice can also depend on the deck material; for example, staining may be a better option for concrete as it bonds well and lasts longer than paint.

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.
