"Preston is a miracle worker. We were having some mysterious issues with our toilet and shower drains in one the bathrooms in our home in Lincoln. Preston came over and performed a very thorough "investigation" and provided a couple of options to rectify our situation. He performed the work and everything has been flowing flawlessly ever since. We're going to definitely stick with Preston and Neighborhood Drains for all of our future sewer related needs. Give him a call. You definitely won't be disappointed."

"John was fantastic. We had a section of sewer pipe that was something called Orangeburg (glorified tar paper form WW2 war shortage era). It was falling apart and had serious roots in it. He took A LOT of time and care and was able to clear the roots mostly out without destroying the rotting pipe, to the point where it will be usable for a few more months. The pipe will need to be replaced, but John bought us A LOT of time on a very expensive future job. He also was able to pinpoint what parts of the yard would need to be dug up and was able to recommend someone. It was obvious he cared about what he was doing and wasn't just in there for a quick payday. HIGHLY RECCOMEND."

"Thank you for coming out the same day I called.kitchen drain clogs every year during the holidays. Paul was able to pressure wash and used three different grades of cable tops. This process was very successful and I was shown the results on the camera."

"We had a sewage backup in the house. An absolute mess. Later at night. Kept calling and couldn't get anyone to come out. Finally found Lackey's through Thumbs-up. Thank God. The guys came out and did an excellent job. They cleared the blockage, cammed it, saw a root in the pipe, and were able to clear that out all in the same night. Reasonable priced, too. Professional and incredibly positive throughout the whole experience. I made sure to save their number for any future issues. Highly recommend."

Sewer Cleaning questions, answered by experts

It is generally safe to stay in a house that smells like sewage for a short time, but you should get the problem fixed as soon as possible. While the level of sewer gas is usually low enough to only cause minor symptoms, prolonged inhalation can lead to headaches, nausea, or respiratory irritation. High levels of gas exposure can be more dangerous, and high concentrations of methane—a component of sewer gas—can pose an explosion risk in enclosed spaces. If you smell sewer gas in your home, ventilate the area and call a professional to locate, assess, and fix the problem, as it will not go away on its own.

It's advisable to have your sewer line inspected every three to five years to ensure its proper functioning and detect any potential issues early on. However, the frequency of inspections can vary based on factors such as the age of your sewer system, the type of pipes used, and your property's location. If you notice any warning signs like slow drains, foul odors, or sewage backups, it's essential to schedule an inspection promptly, regardless of the regular maintenance schedule.

An active cleaning agent and a drain snake is the best way to clean a main sewer line. You can purchase a regular or enzyme drain cleaner or make a DIY drain cleaner with baking soda. Use your chosen solution at least once a month or as needed to keep your sewer line clear.

Your sewer line can get grimy quickly. To prevent sludge buildup in your sewer line, pour a mixture of 1/3 cup of vinegar and 1/3 cup of baking soda down each drain in your home once a month. After about 30 minutes, flush the drain with hot water.

Some plumbers recommend 3/4 cup of bleach instead to clean any germs and bacteria that may build up in your sewer line. But this won’t break down any active clogs, and it cannot be combined with vinegar, as the mixture will create a toxic, hazardous gas.

Depending on the home, wastewater either goes into a septic tank and seeps back into the backyard or is sent via sewer system to a local sewage-treatment plant. Septic systems naturally separate different components of the waste so that it can naturally and safely disperse it. They are usually reserved for homes not served by a municipal sewage department (like rural homes). A treatment plant, on the other hand, speeds up that process through screening and purification.
