"I can't speak highly enough about this company. When I called to arrange an on site visit for an estimate, they showed up on time and listened to everything I had to say about the job. I was given a written quote on the spot (something I rarely see from contractors), so I offered them the job. To my surprise, he said he could get started the very next day (a Saturday) and that they would be able to finish the following Monday when the deck had dried off. They arrived to start the job when they said they would, and got to work right away. I was concerned I would need to move the stuff we have on the decks, but they told me they could simply move them to the side and then move them back when they were done. They did exactly that, and everything was put back to its original position when they were finished. They were power washing all day, and were very thorough. When they came back two days later, they again went to work right away rebuilding the stairs and water sealing the deck. The stairs look great! They even added a step so the bottom step could sit more securely on the concrete (it had been resting on a cinder block before being rebuilt). They advised to wait 1-2 days for the water sealer to dry before using the decks, we paid them, and they did a great job cleaning up when they left. I wish all contractors we hired were as efficient and straightforward as the people working at Melvin Power Wash. I will absolutely call on them again when my decks need maintenance, or if my house needs a wash."

"Good experience. Phil was great. Very thorough and was able to schedule us in where it worked best for us. We are very grateful for that. Only thing was that when they came out to do the work, they stuck to the work order to the T even though upon removing some rotten wood, we saw that we may need additional work behind it to properly complete the repair we needed done. I would have appreciated being made aware of that and consulted before just going ahead and putting fresh wood over a hidden problem. I was only notified about this because another handyman at the house sent me a picture of it. Also, there was debris left in the gutter from the roof work and I had to ask them to check and clean it out. Our downspouts go underground and that could have been a big issue down the line if I hadn't caught that as well. For the price, they were good. But maybe don't walk away for the day."

"My wife and I have an architect-designed Trelleborg house, which we had built in 1991 with components imported from Denmark, Sweden and Germany. The roof is Danish concrete tile, and after the severe storm in late August damaged our roof and one skylight, we used Home Advisor to locate a contractor who could handle the repairs, and were fortunate to have All Brothers contact us. We are still working with Jani and Chucki to finalize the details of the project, and Phil performed a temporary repair that gives us time to acquire the necessary components. Thus far we are extremely pleased with their skills and the way they do business. After looking for years for a company that can work competently on a European tile roof, we have finally found a group of traditionally-trained craftsmen who are knowledgeable, responsible and articulate. I am confident that All Brothers will maintain the integrity of our house, which was designed to be energy-efficient and built with non-VOC components, and trust them completely. In addition to their building skills, it's notable that you can always get in contact with them: their receptionist is unfailingly polite and helpful, and if you give them a call anytime someone will either answer the phone immediately or else get back to you in minutes. I recommend All Brothers in the highest possible terms."

"Really pleased with my new deck. The work was completed quickly and looks amazing. I wish they'd removed the leftover building materials but that's a minor thing. Definitely recommend"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Most load-bearing walls are exterior, though they can also be interior.

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.

A few signs that you need a new door frame include:

  • The door no longer fits properly in its frame and sticks or scrapes.

  • You notice cracks, holes, or rotting.

  • You feel a draft coming from around the door when it’s closed.

  • You find yourself frequently needing to make repairs.

It's possible to turn your carport into a living space, but there are additional factors to address over turning it into a garage. HVAC, plumbing, and electricity won't be optional, and you'll need finished flooring, drywall, trim work, and legal ceiling height, for starters. Also, keep in mind that living space conversions may require upgrading the foundation underneath, and the permits might be more expensive as well.

Building a barndominium means converting a barn into a house. Barndominiums are becoming popular as spacious and stylish alternatives to typical housing structures. Old barns that become houses traditionally consist of wooden construction. However, newer structures, such as pole barns, often contain metal exteriors and roofs. Converting a metal outbuilding into a house presents an excellent opportunity to create a barndominium from metal.
