"Brian of Sergeant Major Stump Grinding was excellent. I've left a long-detailed review - but I can sum it up here in 3 lines: 1) Easy to work with and professional  2) Great competitive prices / quotes. 3) Did exactly what I asked for and left the site looking better than it did. He is an upbeat guy, who was willing to come out and quote my project on the weekend. He asked if I could text him detailed photos of the stumps, which I did. Based on the pics that I texted him; he was able to quote me via text. This eliminated two trips out to my house, and enabled this project to happen very quickly - which I greatly appreciate! His quote was extremely reasonable, so I agreed to his quote, and he came out at our agreed upon time on Sunday. He was right on time. His equipment was extremely clean, and his safety protocols were excellent - which I appreciated. His stump grinder wasn't that loud, and my wife was able to meet with friends inside the house the entire time that Brian ground the two stumps. His work was extremely neat as well. He asked me where I wanted the wood chip piles from the stumps and I told him where I wanted them. He filled the stump holes and had very neat piles of wood chips for me. He also used a blower and left the job site cleaner than it looked before he got there. I would hire him again in a heartbeat. Thank you! Karl Lund"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Hiring an arborist or tree surgeon is usually more expensive than a standard tree company, but it is often worth the investment. Arborists have education and certifications that standard companies typically lack, leading to a more professional, expert-level service. Their expertise is particularly valuable for diseased or infested trees, as they can ensure safer removal and help prevent the issue from spreading. Additionally, arborists may be necessary for work near power lines, as uncertified companies are often not permitted to service these trees. If your goal is to preserve the health of your trees, an arborist is the best choice. Their services, such as stump grinding, are also performed with greater expertise to ensure a safe depth that won't cause your lawn to collapse over time.

You can start your search for a reputable arborist online by looking for professionals who hold the proper licensing and are fully insured. Next, read through some online reviews to see what kind of service the expert brings to the table, and confirm that they don’t have a history of complaints with the Better Business Bureau. Finally, you can ask the professional for a list of references and then call them to ask questions about the service, professionalism, value, and more that the expert brings to the table.

Sometimes, knowing when you need tree-trimming services is straightforward, and other times, you have to do some investigating. Some tell-tale signs that you should have your tree trimmed include:

  • A poorly-formed tree with unruly branches, which makes the tree appear odd-shaped.

  • A tree with tall or large branches that interfere with power lines or your home’s exterior.

  • A tree that provides too much shade in the yard due to branch overgrowth.

There are a few instances in which removing a tree is the best option. You might do this if the tree looks to be a major danger—potentially falling onto your home, your car, or other parts of your property—or it’s diseased beyond repair. A tree that is growing too close to your house might need to be removed to prevent mold growth.

In the short term, you’ll have a lot of fallen trees to deal with. Tree removal services costs typically start at $200 per tree and increase based on species and size. Then, you’ll have to deal with the loss of trees: That means a loss of shade and a greater risk of rain runoff and erosion. Also, you’ll miss out on the health and aesthetic benefits of having trees on your property, which could even affect the resale value of your home.

That being said, cutting down a tree it’s not always a bad idea. Trees growing too close to rooftops can present fire hazards or debris problems. You may need to remove diseased or dying trees to prevent future issues.
