I'm pretty handy at most tasks, I went to the University of Nebraska for construction and business management. I have been doing this kind of work since the early 2000s, I have built multiple single-family homes from the ground up as well as a few commercial projects. I have had my hands in just about every aspect of the construction process. I am comfortable doing electrical, plumbing, drywall/sheetrock, carpet, framing, finishing, foundations, deck or patio, excavation, cabinets/ countertops, doors, brick, siding, concrete, and more.

It is a good idea to brush a pool before shocking. Brushing the sides and floor loosen up anything that is growing on the surface, such as algae. It is then easier for the pool shock to kill the contaminants because more of it will come in contact with the chemicals.

It’s a good idea to wait at least 24 hours after opening your pool before you swim in it. Pool opening often involves shocking the water, and the chemical levels need to come down a bit before it’s safe to swim. You can continue testing your water pH and chlorine levels if you’re in a rush. It’s wise to wait until your chlorine levels drop to under four parts per million (ppm) and you have a water pH of between 7.2 and 7.8. You can artificially lower your water pH to speed up the process.

Pool chemical levels should include a pH between 7.4 and 7.6, alkalinity between 80 to 120 ppm, and chlorine from 1 to 3 ppm. While the main ingredient in pool shock is chlorine, it is used differently than traditional pool chlorine tablets. Shock is a highly concentrated amount of chlorine and other chemicals that quickly raise the chlorine levels in your water to prevent issues with imbalances. Cloudy water, algae, or poor pH may require pool shock to fix the issue rapidly.

In many homes, an unfinished basement is an ideal place for an in-ground pool. The concrete floors, protection against water damage, and access to the ground below your home make this a large contender.
