"Absolutely great experience. We had considered getting my favorite family room cushions (oversized couch, loveseat, and chair) restuffed a couple of years ago but were dissuaded by the cost (estimate $3000). We were going to buy new furniture but I truly loved the oversized comfortable set that we currently have. I found the reviews for Sara Upholstery online and was skeptical as the reviews were too good to be true. I sent an inquiry at 8 PM and received a response within 10 minutes. I sent photos and received an estimate the same evening. On Saturday, they came to our house, provided a firm estimate which included high density foam, recutting all of the cushions due to stretch, and repairing significant damage to the couch frame for $1060. The next Saturday they returned with the completed cushions and repaired my large couch. Since my recent experience with home improvement/contractors has been horrible, I was fascinated by this couples service, workmanship, and timeliness. They learned the furniture trade in Mongolia, worked in upholstery is Denver, and have recently started their own business. They told me they do not speak English well, and that is their greatest barrier; I found their online presence was professional and communication more than adequate. I almost never write reviews unless I have a gripe. This is a business which is exceptional in both service and value. I cannot recommend them more highly."

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

If your usually super soft couch feels crusty and rough after cleaning, it could be that you haven’t removed the cleaning product properly, you used too much, or you applied the wrong type. Always check the couch tags to select the right cleaning product, read application instructions carefully, and test on an inconspicuous corner. For fabrics such as microfiber, you can soften and fluff crusty fibers using a soft-bristled brush.

The time required to reupholster furniture depends on the item's size, complexity, and condition. The hands-on work can range from 2-3 hours for a simple dining chair to 10 to 20 hours for a large sofa. The total project timeline with a professional, including fabric sourcing and scheduling, typically ranges from one to three weeks.

Several factors can affect the timeline. Antique furniture often takes longer due to the delicate care required. If additional repairs are needed, such as sanding or refinishing wood components, the process will also take more time. A DIY reupholstery project will usually take significantly longer than a professional job.

Although it’s not standard, many upholstery professionals offer warranties on their workmanship, typically ranging from six months to several years. However, most warranties don't cover normal wear and tear, damage from spills and other accidents, or problems with the original furniture frame. Before starting your project, be sure to ask about warranty terms, what is covered, and any exclusions.

You should consider the time needed to clean and prepare your bedroom set for transit. A few days before moving, vacuum, dust, and clean your furniture with a mild cleaning solution. Depending on the movers and the services you pick, you might need to pre-pack the mattress and box spring in boxes designed for beds and disassemble some furniture by removing doors and hardware. Finally, don’t forget to take plenty of pictures documenting the pre-move condition in case you need to file a claim.

Doing your own upholstery work is possible, but it’s typically a better idea to leave the work to professionals. Without experience and the proper tools, it’s difficult to get a professionally finished appearance for your furniture, and many DIYers end up spending money on tools and materials only to hire a professional when they can’t get the fabric to look right. If you have reupholstery experience, feel free to give it a shot. However, if you’re not confident in your skill level or you’re working with antiques, it’s worth the money to hire a pro.
