"We were supposed to have a hard freeze end of September. The man tried my small air compressor and it didn’t blow out my lines. He said he would come right back with a bigger one and never showed up. Never did the work. I called many times asking where he was and if he was returning and could he please call. No answers and no return calls. I continued to call through Monday. No answers and no return calls to my messages. I said I’d pay for him coming out and to send a bill for what he did do or the trip fee. No response. I just don’t understand that. I didn’t get a bill either so assumed he knew he messed up by never returning to do the job. I got the first bill end of December 3 months later! Past due on it?! No return calls again and no answer when I called and called. I sent a letter and he sends me to collections?! I’m now reporting to consumer agencies and the county and city. I don’t get why they never answered or returned my calls. You can’t charge for what you did not do."

Lawn Irrigation questions, answered by experts

Before you put down grass seed, you should cultivate your soil or add two inches of topsoil. You should also put down fertilizer at the same time as your seed to prompt healthy growth. Be sure to water after you put down grass seed, especially for the first two weeks.

Yes, you can DIY either core or liquid aeration for your lawn. You can use a manual core aerator or rent an automatic one. Just be sure to mark off yard obstacles like sprinkler heads before you start. Liquid aeration is easier—just hook up a garden pump sprayer, although some are able to be attached to a hose. While liquid aeration is not as laborious as core aeration, you will need to focus on an even distribution of the solution across your entire lawn for it to be effective. Of course, if you are unsure about doing both, call a pro.

The screwdriver test involves trying to push a screwdriver into your lawn. If it goes in easily, you’re likely overwatering and should cut back. If there’s moderate resistance, you have a good watering schedule and soil composition. If there’s a lot of resistance or you can’t get the screwdriver into the soil, you may need to aerate your lawn to reduce compaction and increase your watering schedule.

Power seeding machines do a great job of creating narrow trenches in the soil to plant grass seeds into, but aerating before power seeding can be beneficial for your lawn. By aerating first, more water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide can reach the roots of your germinating grass seeds. Plan to aerate your lawn about once or twice a year, whether you plan to power seed or not.

While you may see some germination by simply tossing a handful of new seeds on a lawn, you'll have more success by following the proper reseeding or overseeding process step-by-step. Without properly tilling, mowing, amending the soil, and watering your lawn, the new seed could blow away or simply fail to take root.
