"The project was to clean and stain our deck, and we asked him to put stain on a small patio as well. Also, I asked if he could complete it on short notice. Mike worked it into his schedule, and in the end, the deck looks great. The patio is not Mike's specialty, and it turned out okay. In the end, we plan to hire Mike to clean our fence later this fall. When it comes to wood, Mike does a great job, and I would recommend him. Regarding the value, I'm not an expert in this space, but the cost seemed a little high for what we received."

"Austin and his contractors were first class, polite, courteous, always on time and easy to work with. Our project was completed very professionally. The work began on time, was completed on time and on budget. Every effort was made to maintain cleanliness both inside the work area and elsewhere. Temporary screening and flooring was used to protect the area and at the end of the work the area was cleaned. We are very satisfied with the outcome, and would thoroughly recommend this business."

"Job involved rebuilding my deck because I wanted to install Trex which is much heavier than wood, requiring 12 in. joist spacing vs. 16 in. I also wanted to use my existing metal railing, so Deck Doctor (DD) workers had to build the new deck with exact measurements to the old deck which also included an odd angle on one side. DD workers also had to take down a heavy scaffolding type structure that I had on one side of the deck to hold a sunshade, and then put it back up again in a precise location so it would bump against my deck rollout shade. They poured concrete footings and a concrete pad at the bottom of the stairs which I didn't have before. They also attached a lattice skirt (which I bought and stained). I love the new deck and think they did a great job. Justin, the sales rep, was great to work with, answered all my questions, and gave assurances that they would make sure I was happy with the final product. However, Justin is very busy, so it's helpful to have a bit of patience and a willingness to text. There were a couple of surprises which required more work and more material expense due in part to my change of mind and in part to having to construct the stair support from scratch which wasn't anticipated. This increased the cost so just be aware that the bids can't always anticipate everything. Still, I think the price was reasonable given that Trex is very expensive and was a significant component of the total cost. The DD workers were very respectful, cleaned up every day and kept track of all the details of constructing the deck identical to the old one. My deck dimensions are 18' by about 13'. I would hire Deck Doctor again."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

It’s best to prime composite decking before painting. This promotes better paint adhesion, helps create a smooth finish, and can mean the paint job will last longer. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application, allow ample primer drying time before painting (typically 24 to 48 hours), and thoroughly clean the deck boards to promote the best adhesion.

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Rot loves moisture, so deck rot typically impacts the parts of a board that stay wet. This includes the underside of boards, in addition to support posts and joists. However, any part of a board can rot, given the right conditions.

In general, you need a footing at each corner of your deck, and within 8 feet of each other. So, how many you need depends on the size and shape of your deck, plus any local building codes. It also depends on factors like the load capacity of your soil and the weight of your deck. You can find a footing calculator online or contact a pro for support.

Floating decks are a cost-effective and versatile option, but they come with some compromises. Since they sit on smaller footings instead of being deeply anchored, they’re more likely to shift over time, especially in areas with heavy rainfall or freeze-thaw conditions. Their low-to-the-ground design makes them more susceptible to moisture buildup and potential water damage.
