"We had water seeping into our basement after all of the heavy rains we've had In Denver lately, and wanted to resolve it before installing new flooring. I called several places but they were either booked out months in advance for free estimates or didn't return my call. Larry called me the following morning after I left him a message and he was a wealth of information. He was very professional, and didn't charge a dime for the great advice he provided. He explained that 9.5/10 homes he's seen recently have the same issue with water in their basement (not foundation problems - which is what we thought initially) and there are several things we can do ourselves to prevent it in the future. I'm sure he's had a ton of the same issues come up recently with our record rainfall and it's great he's willing to share his experience/knowledge free of charge. He mainly advised us to make sure our gutters were cleaned all the time, make sure we had 5-6' gutter extensions on every single downspout, ditch our underground gutter (which is just putting more water into the already saturated ground), make sure our landscaping slopes away from the house, and possibly replace our old gutters (4" gutters are typical on older homes - ours was built in 1969, but standard today are 6-7" gutters to help prevent the heavy rain from just rolling out of the gutter falling directly at our foundation, thus leading to more water in the basement). He also provided us a referral for a hydro-caulking professional as we did notice a few cracks in our wall behind the drywall. In the future, I would definitely use RemCon!"

Drywall Insulation questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can use drywall repair techniques for some types of plaster damage. Tiny holes and small cracks in plaster can be patched in similar ways to drywall. You apply the necessary compound to fill the hole, wait for it to dry, then sand it down. For larger damage, like water damage or mold, you need to use plaster-specific techniques and materials.

There are several things you should not do when installing drywall. Common mistakes include: adding too many screws, over-sanding, not adding backing support, and installing drywall unevenly. You also should avoid screwing into the same place twice, installing Sheetrock with tapered edges on the outside, and making too many joints.

On average, drywall installation costs around $2,000, with a typical range of $400 to $6,000, including materials and labor. The final price depends on several factors. The most significant is the size of the area, as many contractors charge per square foot. Other cost factors include the complexity of the job (e.g., cutting around multiple windows and doors, corners, or curved walls), accessibility, location, the thickness of the drywall, the height of the room, and the desired level of finish. The level of finish can range from simply hanging the drywall to taping and mudding the seams and painting the walls.

Plaster ceilings can sag for several reasons. In some cases, the plaster and other building materials shift and come apart over time, which is why you’ll commonly find drooping plaster ceilings in older homes. Improper installation, foot traffic, and water damage—often from a leaky roof or a broken pipe—can also cause plaster ceilings to sag.

If you plan on heating your garage, you must install a vapor barrier when drywalling the garage. A vapor barrier protects your garage from frost and mold that can occur through condensation. If your garage is unheated, you don't need to install a vapor barrier. The only exception is if you regularly crank the heat in your car before getting in it. In this case, you may still want to install a vapor barrier, as your car can heat your garage.
