Customers say: Quick response

"Jake took down our old barn and removed two dead trees and relocated our water hydrant. He showed up a week before the job to give my husband advice on removing the electrical panel and get exact dimension for water hydrant. All went smooth in this 95 degree weather. Thanks Jake, you did a great job!"

"FEMA required that our commercial property grade be raised out of the new floodplain. I pulled together bids from numerous companies and got their opinion on how they would go about the project because of it being in a hard to reach area. Of all the bids, Buds was the most affordable, and his approach to handling the project was very straight forward and made the most sense. He got started right away and stayed on the project every day until it was complete, which didn't take long. He stuck to his quote and there were no surprises. The site has been surveyed and the work looks good down to every detail. Bud and his company BMG Services will always be my go-to service provider for any future projects."

"I had a stopped up drainage line from my house to the street, water was backing up into the house through the toilets and bathtub. This was Saturday morning. I called my usual Estes Park plumber and was forwarded to Lion since they had taken over the business. They couldn't come on Saturday but David came on Sunday and worked very hard to clear the line. It sort of worked but backed up again after he left. So on Monday two Lion plumbers with cameras and spinning snakes came and got the line to the street certainly cleared out. I am good for now but they recommended fixing the lines permanently for which they gave me an estimate. So, although it took three days to fully resolve the problem I am very happy with the way Lion took ownership of my problem and didn't stop until it was resolved. They had to take detours to my house due to road closures because of wildfires! I am happy to replace my old Estes Park outfit with Lion Home Service. I even signed up for their annual maintenance contract."

Basement Waterproofing questions, answered by experts

Several types of insulation are effective for crawl spaces, with spray foam and rigid foam boards being two of the best options. Closed-cell spray foam insulation is a strong choice because it effectively repels moisture, resists biological growth, seals the air, and provides excellent thermal protection, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Rigid foam insulation boards are another excellent material as they insulate well, resist water damage, and will not settle over time like fiberglass or cellulose.

Crawl spaces are the more desirable option overall because they provide additional space for storage and utilities, but they are more expensive to install and maintain. Slab foundations are considered a better option in warmer climates where the depth of the frost line isn’t an issue because they’re more affordable, but crawl spaces are better in areas where the frost line is deep or where flooding can be an issue.

In most climates, contractors recommend closing your crawl space vents in winter. Keeping them shut protects your crawl space from freezing temperatures, pests, and cool breezes that can lead to chilly floors in your home. However, it's often best to speak with a local crawl space team about your specific design and its relationship to the winter season.

Yes, cleaning a crawl space is worth the cost. Although it's an out-of-sight area, neglecting it can lead to significant problems like pest infestations (including termites and carpenter ants), mold, and fungal growth, which can cause structural damage. Regular cleaning helps prevent these issues. While hiring a contractor has ongoing costs, the price for cleaning—typically between $0.50 and $4 per square foot—is much lower than the cost to remediate a pest or mold problem. Additionally, a clean crawl space can lead to improved indoor air quality and more comfortable temperatures in your home.

If there is standing liquid on your concrete, remove it before attempting any of the above cleaning methods. For small amounts of water, use rags, a bucket, and a mop. For larger areas of liquid, lay down cat litter or baking soda to soak up the water first. If you have extremely large pools of water sitting on your concrete, break out the wet vac and get to work.
