"We hired Wright Brothers to do our basement remodel that included a full bar, guest bedroom, bathroom, and a lot of custom millwork (i.e built in entertainment center, wainscoting, base trim and window casing). Although we had a design in mind before we hired Wright Brothers, they were able to offer suggestions to improve what we had already started. Their prices were very fair and the communication from the beginning to the end of the project was outstanding. We never felt pressured to do anything and they were always upfront and transparent when items outside the scope of work were identified. Guests are constantly amazed when they walk in our basement and see the before and after pictures. It is a place our family will use for many years to come thanks to the quality, dependability and integrity Cameron and Jordan put into their jobs."

"I hired Sage Homes to transform my basement into a gaming area, wet bar, guest room, and bathroom. The project was completed on time and within budget, which was a huge relief. Christi was excellent at communicating throughout the entire process. The crew was professional and cleaned up after themselves. I'm very happy with the quality of the work and the finished basement is a cozy addition to our home. I would highly recommend Sage Homes to anyone looking for a basement remodel!"

"Hometown Construction was an excellent partner in the construction of my deck and basement remodel. Josh was professional, listened to my concerns and finished on time and on budget. His subcontractors emulated the same values and professionalism as Josh."

"I hired Jimmy to access AC in my basement, he discovered my home was plummed, but looked like it was never installed. The father/son team sold me on installing AC in my basement. They were very friendly, family like and down to earth offering to also take care of a few other handyman services that I inquired about with them. Needless to say, after writing the check for the AC work (which I know nothing about to rate it other than it seems to work - I rated a 3 because that seems to make sense to me. I was disappointed they offered to help me and never answered my calls, text or returned again. I've put off writing this review, it even saddens me, because integrity is #1 in my life. Please don't offer or make a commitment and not follow through. Thank you."

"I hired Z-Man Remodeling for a basement remodeling project. This included demolition of the existing features, then framing, drywall, flooring, LED lighting, outlets, plumbing, trim, painting, and final cleanup for two large rooms and a bathroom. Rudy and his crew did an excellent job. The work was completed within the estimated schedule and budget. I would definitely hire them again."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Yes, most general contractors require an initial down payment, typically between 10% and 25% of the total project cost. This upfront payment helps cover the costs of materials, permits, and subcontractors. The remaining project costs are usually billed after specific project milestones are reached or on set completion dates, as outlined in your contract. Be wary of contractors who require a significant deposit of 50% or more upfront, as this could be a red flag for a scam.

For most basement remodels, you’ll want to hire a general contractor. This is for a number of reasons, but the main two are that general contractors have dedicated teams they are comfortable with, and hiring one means you only have to deal with one pro. You may also get a better project quote since they can lump all their work and subcontracting into a single quote.

If you have the woodworking experience to build a bar from scratch and you have the time, DIYing the work is a no-brainer and can save a few thousand dollars. However, if you’re looking to include a sink, additional lighting fixtures, or high-end bar tops and cabinets, it’s usually a better idea to call in a pro. It will cost more, but the finished product will likely be worth it.

Walkout basements cost more than other kinds of basements, and can also increase your risk of leaks as well as a loss of insulation, leading to higher heating and cooling costs. Improperly installed walkout basements may lead to structural issues with your foundation, so ensure you’re working with a contractor who has extensive experience with this kind of basement.

Although it’s not required, air ventilation in a finished basement can help improve the air quality, prevent moisture and mold issues, keep musty odors away, and also maintain the air quality throughout the rest of your home. Proper ventilation will help maintain the value of your investment in finishing your basement. Try basement ventilation methods like installing vents or a dehumidifier for best results.
