"After careful consideration, I chose The Home Remodeling Guys to re-roof my house and garage for one key reason: their expertise and professionalism. From the very beginning, they were incredibly knowledgeable, thorough, and made me feel completely at ease about the entire project. I’m so glad I made the right choice. The work was completed on time, and both my house and garage roofs look fantastic. They took care of all the details, from paperwork to scheduling, and kept me updated regularly, which was a huge relief. I cannot recommend The Home Remodeling Guys highly enough—professional, reliable, and committed to doing the job right!"

Garages questions, answered by experts

Insulating a detached garage won't reduce your home's heating or cooling bills—and insulating an attached garage will only have a small effect on your home's energy efficiency. However, insulating an attached garage can reduce the transfer of heating and cooling to and from the outdoors, which can reduce the amount of energy your home needs to stay comfortable. Also, having an insulated garage is just more pleasant. Balance the cost of insulating your garage with how you'll use the space to determine if the project is worth it.

Garage door sensors should be installed on each side of the door, typically six inches off of the ground. The sensors communicate through an infrared beam, so they need to face each other directly for the system to work properly. Make sure they’re level and aligned, and keep the area around them clear. If they’re too high or out of alignment, your garage door won’t function properly.

The most common garage door material is aluminum, but the best material for you depends on your budget and location. Wood is the most expensive to repair but tends to add the most curb appeal, while fiberglass or composite doors cost less to fix.

Aluminum won’t rust, so it’s a great option if you live somewhere humid or rainy. Steel doors are durable but are prone to rust. If you live somewhere with extreme temperatures, hot or cold, you might opt for fiberglass, which won’t split if the temperatures skyrocket or drop below freezing.

Garage cabinets are different from interior cabinets because they typically hold heavier tools and face more extreme temperature changes since they’re outside your heating and cooling system. For that reason, many homeowners opt for heavy-duty cabinet materials, like metal or steel. However, wood cabinets also work well in a garage for storing lighter items like garden supplies, protective gear, and small tools.

It is possible to manually open a garage door. However, whether you should manually open a garage door depends on the source of the problem. If the door doesn't open because of a broken spring or cable, for safety's sake, you'll want to leave the door closed until you can have a professional inspect it and repair it. If the problem lies with the opener itself, you should usually have no problem opening the door manually.
