Customers say: Quick response

"My feeling is that Cal and his team are genuinely driven towards providing excellence in whatever project they take on. I had a dry rot situation I had left far too long and needed to replace the entirety of one outside wall of my home. Patton Construction was more than up to the task! They went above and beyond, in my opinion, to make everything just perfect... from the quality of materials and paint to the removal of and replacement of fixtures such as air conditioner, cable and security system. It all looks like brand new! Im fact, I gonna see if they are available to recaulk, and repair trim all around the house and repaint to match! I am sure they will do as tremendous a job with that as well!"

"We have had a great rapport over the years. They know the quirks of my old home and how to fix just about anything that has been done to it (or not done to it) over the past 125 years of its existence. We have worked under a time/material agreement for smaller jobs and contracts for the larger jobs. Communication is great, they are there rain or shine and stay on the job until its done. My list has been long on getting this 'ole place fixed up and they have made it happen. I've got more to do and can't think of anyone else I would call. Thanks for the help guys!!"

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Start by researching local contractors with experience in cottage construction. Ask for references, check licensing and insurance, and review completed projects. Compare multiple bids, making sure each includes the same scope of work. A good contractor will communicate clearly, provide a detailed contract, and ensure all work meets code and safety standards.

Modular homes last an average of between 50 and 75 years, and high-quality modular homes can last for 100 years with proper maintenance. For comparison, a standard home lasts 50 to 100 years and can push to 150 or longer with good maintenance. Modular homes provide better long-term value in that they are significantly more affordable and can last almost as long, but some buyers are wary of modular home longevity, so the actual value if you sell could be lower.

Above all, the downside to building a new house is a longer timeline. You need several months to finish the build, depending on the supply chain and labor availability in the meantime. Building a home compared to buying one is also more expensive, both in the building process and when it comes to mortgage rates and property taxes.

Typically, architects do not build homes in a hands-on sense of doing the actual framing, roofing, or other building. Architects usually do not have the training and experience to build the homes they design. An architect would need to know how to do the specific trades required to build a house, which is possible but not a common practice. A general contractor or homebuilder typically oversees the actual details of building the house that the architect designs.

Green homes are often more expensive to build, averaging around $200 per square foot compared to the $150 per square foot you’d spend to build a standard home. However, green homes can save you money on your utility bills by consuming less energy or creating energy using solar panels or wind turbines on-site. They’re more expensive to build, but they often end up costing less in the long run.
