Customers say: True professional

"We’re very pleased with Lancer’s work. He installed two light fixtures, two wall switches, and a hardwired outlet strip in a wall previously not wired for this. It involved excavating the drywall and drilling sideways through wall studs to pull wire to the appropriate six areas. He accomplished this by making a mere two holes in the drywall (not including the holes behind the fixtures. This was no easy feat since it’s an exterior wall with insulation, making fishing wire a considerable pain (which I know because I’ve had to do it when installing a TV where I ran the wires inside the wall). He arrived on time, and his work was quick, clean, and efficient, with all fixtures placed level and even. He is obviously very experienced. I would provide pictures but with the electrical now done, I’m in the process of repairing some unrelated drywall imperfections in the same wall and doing a skim coat so everything is taped off and dusty. We will definitely be hiring Lancer again."

"I can highly recommend New Design Electric. I contacted them to install a car charger in my garage. I knew nothing about this, and James explained what needed to be done and patiently answered all my questions. The job increased in scope when it was determined my electrical panel had to be replaced or a second panel installed in order to accommodate the new circuit. I was provided with clear explanations of the alternatives and cost estimates. James and his crew went above and beyond to put the charger exactly where I wanted it in the garage. The work was done in a very professional and timely manner. And, when my new car arrived sooner than expected, James accommodated my schedule and completed the installation the next day. I could not have asked for more."

"Rick's electrical work was clean, simple and, in a word, elegant. We started by replacing our patchwork of boxes at home with a single service, went on to wire several outbuildings on another property, had him install security lighting for us, and referred him to several friends and family members. Then we discovered that he also offers handyman services! We've been in heaven ever since -- this man is a treasure!
We've had to wait occasionally while he handles emergencies for others, but that comes with the territory when a person is as skilled as Rick is. We're really happy to have him to call on when things go wrong.

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

You can expect a diesel generator to last for up to 30,000 hours of use, which works out to 20 to 25 years with the proper maintenance, of course. That depends on how much you use it, so a diesel generator used for emergencies a couple of times a year will last a lot longer than a generator that takes over for a faulty electrical grid every month for a day or two.

A home that is 2,500 square feet will likely need a 20kW to 25kW generator. Consult your local generator installer to confirm the generator size needed to power your home before purchasing a new one. Be sure to consider how much power your necessary devices need to run.

Setting up utilities on a vacant property usually takes at least a few months, or between 6 weeks to 16 weeks. This process requires working with the local planning and zoning department, hiring a building contractor or engineer to design the utility layout, securing permits, laying the lines, and connecting the utilities.

Many services include assembling the unit and securing it in the window. Confirm with your provider.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.
