"Dave was punctual and was very hardworking, making sure my new decking system was installed correctly. He took the time to install each layer of the decking system and made the finished surface graded so the water drained off perfectly. I would hire him again if I ever need to redo my deck."

"We are preparing for more rain than usual and purchased a coupon for Thomas Parks Contracting to clean and repair our gutters.  Upon inspecting the roof while he was doing the gutter work, Thomas told us it was in fairly good shape and just needs some maintenance.  He also recommended a sealer.  We contracted for the work and he came within a few days with a crew to perform the work. All the work was done with professionalism and an attention to detail.  They even repaired two of our gates into the back yard - above the call of duty.  I recommend them with no reservations."

"BG Tile and Construction gets an 'A+' from the enzers.  The finished product is excellent and met all expectations.  This was our 3rd partial remodel of our house and we would work with BG again for any additional work required inside or outside.    We live in Encino in a contemporary, modern house.

Joseph Giram was prepared, and BG made or exceeded all deadlines during the project.   They were very responsive during the entire
project. From the very first meeting, we were impresses with his computer layout for the job and his suggestions for how to handle various design elements.    Joseph's planning made a huge difference:  we did the 2 kids bathrooms first, than did the master which is large and required a big team.   Joseph and his 2 brothers are hands-on and were always in loop with us via phones and email throughout the day.  Even as BG had other projects running in other places, they personally were on site almost every day to supervise and review for small pick-up items.   We had a slight problem with outdoor plumbing issues and BG fixed the problem in
real time and we only lost a few hours.  in another situation he found some prior work in the supporting beams and framing that needed to be re-done and reinforced and his team did that also over the weekend.  BG earned our confidence early in the process and even when we traveled away on vacation we gave BG access to the house to complete and we stayed in touch via calls and emails as needed.

I am happy to answer any questions on BG.    If you are planning on a remodel for your house and want the best, BG is it.  We spent a year speaking to a number of contractors in LA; none that overall we felt could deliver on our goals and expectations.  BG did."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Hangers are one way of attaching stair stringers to a deck. These metal hangers are usually adjustable, allowing you to find the ideal angle for a secure installation. They’re the best choice for installing longer staircases, such as one on a two-story deck, to reduce the load on the deck frame while keeping the stairs stable.

While you can use various materials like sand or even just soil, gravel is widely considered the best option to put under a deck. It provides excellent drainage and is resistant to water, fire, and pests. Gravel also helps anchor the soil to prevent erosion during heavy rain and acts as a built-in weed blocker, reducing regular upkeep. Furthermore, it is simple to spread, available in various textures and tones, and adds a polished look that complements any deck design.

Yes, and in some cases, frozen ground may improve the digging process for footings due to sturdier conditions. It’s easier than working in muddy conditions, which are more common in the spring. Contractors may use machinery that makes this step a breeze, so harder ground shouldn’t affect the building process.

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.
