"Dave was punctual and was very hardworking, making sure my new decking system was installed correctly. He took the time to install each layer of the decking system and made the finished surface graded so the water drained off perfectly. I would hire him again if I ever need to redo my deck."

"I had OC Decks repair my existing deck which had numerous structural and esthetic issues. They were so professional throughout the process. Even when change orders came up, they explained everything thoroughly and left decisions to me throughout the project. The workers were neat, timely, experts, and hardworking. I felt like they made safety a priority and they did not rush anything. I am pleased with the final product and I would hire them again in the future."

"Everything about our experience was great and our house looks beautiful!  The estimate was very reasonable, and included a discount for Angie's List members.  The company accommodated our request for an earlier start date, and finished the job a day earlier than expected.  The crew did a great job keeping the site tidy at the end of each day, and cleaning up at the end.   We added two extra items to our original estimate, which were both cheerfully made at a fair price. Everyone at the company was friendly and helpful!  We would definitely use them again and will recommend them to friends.

"While they were up there cleaning the gutters they told me about the deterioration of all the sealants on the air vents, the chimney and exhaust fans on the roof. They took pictures and showed me and I had them redo all the sealants. I have a feeling that that was a smart way for them to get some more work (most people aren't aware of the damage the Ca sun can do). It was the owner of the company and his son that did all the work and they were clean, pleasant and professional. When the 1st rains came after the work was done I suddenly remembered a small leak we had had in our bathroom and IT WAS NO LONGER THERE!! I was very happy with the work they did and would definitely recommend using them."

"BEWARE - or at least think twice - before going with United Builders of LA.  I will start with the good things, because I truly believe in giving credit where credit is due...however, from our experience, I think the bad outweighs the good. It has taken me a year to write this review due to procrastination, but this is the one instance where procrastination was in my favor because one year later, I am not nearly as happy with the outcome as I was a year ago.
Nir definitely is a good sales man, I will give him that. We interviewed a number of contractors, and Nir knows how to talk the talk. His confidence alone was a big selling point for my husband and I.
We were off to a good start with a very reasonable quote, and he even opened our eyes to some great ideas that we had not even considered. He has an eye for design, he had some great suggestions, and he was quick to point out what a shabby job some the prior contractors had done. He had even offered to redo our horrible crown molding or free. He said it was so bad he couldn?t take it, and begged us to let him to us a favor by redoing it.
But don?t let the arrogance fool you. Nir was full of many promises, but unfortunately there were more promises made than kept.
First things first, we were told this job would be ?super easy? and could ?easily? be completed in 2 weeks. I was pregnant at the time, so we figured the quicker the better. I?ve heard horror stories of remodeling timelines, and thought to myself that 2 weeks sounded a little low for the amount of work we were having done, but I was naïve and took his word for it. Needless to say, 2 months later, I was even more pregnant, and the renovation was still not complete.
My husband had a flexible work schedule, so he decided to work from home during the renovation, so he could let the guys in each day and keep an eye on things. Many days they would show up over 2 hours late?and some days they wouldn?t show up at all without any warning?often we were told it was in order to observe spiritual holidays?but it was odd to us that the observance of those holidays were not communicated to us from the beginning. This was just one of many communication problems.
Once the work was finally complete, we were fairly satisfied with the outcome. Our kitchen looked brand new and we paid the final payment without much thought to anything else. However, it has been a full year since the work has been done, and to our dismay, our kitchen is already falling apart.
Our sink faucet is loose, there are loose wires in the cabinet lighting, the cabinets are slightly discolored, some of our kitchen drawers no longer close flush, and the backsplash grout molding is peeling off?.to name a few.
In the past 3 months, we?ve tried to contact the company at least 5 times, so they could come fix these problems. We?ve called and texted Nir directly, and have also contacted the receptionist, who promised to relay the message and have him return our call, but still never heard back.
Needless to say, we are very unhappy with this service, and the turn out, and are now left searching for a new contractor, just to fix what United Builders left unfinished. I am not typically one to leave reviews, but I strongly felt that this was worth noting, especially for other naïve first timers like we were. If you do decide to go with this company, then best of luck to you. But proceed with caution.

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

A sunroom will add more value to your home than a deck, but with a much higher up-front cost. Depending on its construction and function, a sunroom may be counted as additional living space, while a deck is strictly an outdoor feature. Both will increase your home’s value, but the sunroom will have a much bigger effect.

Composite decking requires a solid foundation, substructure, or subframe to ensure stability. This base is typically composed of posts, beams, joists, and footings. The frame's joists can be built from various materials like composite, plastic, timber, or metal, as long as the base can support the deck's weight without shifting. A professional deck builder might recommend installing the frame on a solid concrete base for added durability. The final design and materials for the substructure will depend on your budget, the type of deck, and environmental conditions.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Decks are generally more expensive to build because they require elevating and railings. The difference between decks and patios is that decks are elevated, while patios are usually on the ground level. Plus, decks are usually made of wood and need more maintenance than most patios. However, decks and patios serve the same purpose, providing outdoor space for you to enjoy.

Yes, but ensuring the deck has a solid foundation with adequate footings is critical before building, as the weight of a sunroom will put significant pressure on the structure below. Even if your deck is properly constructed, it may not be able to handle the extra weight. While some basic, lightweight, prefabricated sunrooms can sit on a deck with a strong existing foundation without additional supports, in many cases, the foundation and joists will need reinforcement. It is always best to have a structural engineer perform an inspection to evaluate the deck's quality and structural integrity. A professional can help you decide if reinforcement is sufficient or if it's better to tear down the deck and start over.
