Customers say: Quick response

"Carlos showed up early to my office on a Saturday morning, and finished the replacement of the electrical panel (circa 1940's) with a more up to date one with extra breakers for future expansion, all in record time. He was neat, tidy and efficient, and explained everything he was doing without being asked, in easy to understand "layman's" terms. I will use his services for any future electrical work and will gladly and enthusiastically recommend him to any one I come into contact with who asks for a recommendations for someone to help them with their electrical needs."

"I had Excellence Electric install a Tesla charger in my garage. The job was difficult and required a replacement upgraded 200 amp circuit breaker with a 60 amp power line pulled through the attic across the house and dropped down into the garage where the Tesla charger port needed to be installed. Raymond at Excellence Electric completed the job on schedule, took care of all of the HOA and city permits, and kept me updated all the way through the process. I can highly recommend Raymond at Excellence Electric with out hesitation for any electrical work needed on your home or office. Kyle Webb Casa Del Sole residence"

"Chris was excellent and patient as the electrical work that needed to be done was challenging. I had already purchased a light fixture, he took a look at the area where the work needed to be done and told me his price of $180.00. Having had electrical work done many times I knew his price was very reasonable. I hired him on the spot to put in an electrical box into the ceiling and connect it to the light switch, then install a flush mount LED light fixture onto the ceiling. Chris was prepared to do the job right then. He brought with him his tools, blankets to protect the floor and all the wire, electrical box, etc to complete the job. He chose to go up in a narrow and tight crawl space to send the wire down and out of the open light switch box rather than cut a hole in the bedroom wall. I'm very happy with the work that was done and now have his number on my phone for future electrical work. Highly recommend!"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Unless you’re a licensed electrician, you should not DIY any electrical work in your home. Working with wires and electricity is potentially dangerous to both you and the structure you’re working on, and it could lead to house fires or electric shock if you’re not 100% sure what you’re doing. There’s a big difference between changing a light switch cover and rewiring an entire home. If you’re staring down a potentially difficult electrical job, give a pro a call.

First, check the current electrical code in your area to ensure spaces you’re considering meet the requirements. After that, your outlet’s location is up to you. If you’re moving it to hide wiring, you may want to move it in a spot that will also be hidden from view, such as behind a media center or table. As long as you meet the spacing guidelines set by electrical codes, you should be able to pick any spot in your home for an outlet.

The safest option is to let a technician conduct the inspection. However, if you are certain that the capacitor failed and you take all precautions to avoid electric shock, you can take a look yourself. Usually, you can open the front panel of the unit and use a flashlight to find the small capacitor cylinder. It should have a sticker on it that provides its product number, capacity, and similar information that you can note when talking to a contractor.

Light switches can last for decades when installed and maintained correctly. Improper wiring, heavy wear and tear, or too much wattage draw can cause light switch failure long before the expected end of a light switch’s life. Light switches that are hot to the touch, making a buzzing noise, or failing to work consistently should be inspected to find and repair the underlying cause.

With AC wiring, which is the kind most likely you’ll find at home, the black wire is “hot,” and the white is “neutral.” The bare or green wire is considered the safety ground wire. If you encounter DC wiring, it’s relatively easy to tell positive or negative wires apart. red wires are used to indicate positive voltage and black wires indicate negative voltage.
