"The exterior of our home had been neglected for years and it was starting to show. The siding was worn out, trim boards were rough, and the paint had definitely faded. Julian with Imperia Roofing & Exteriors helped us plan a full refresh with James Hardie siding and new paint. They also repaired a few window trim sections while everything was open. The whole property feels cleaner and more updated now."

"My husband and I live in a rural part of Sac and weâ d been wanting that exterior craftsman look all through the house since we moved in. We decided to hire GVD Renovations as a siding contractor to install our siding on our home and we are both very happy with how everything turned out. We have that great board and batten siding look that we wanted and it blends in well with our landscaping. They did a great job!"

Customers say: True professional

"Outstanding contractor. Treated me fairly when we found unexpected water/drain and pest problems with foundation and siding. Stands by his work and makes sure you are satisfied. Shows up on time, and keeps the site clean. I would use them for just about any project. They knew when to call a structural engineer and we modified our project with great success. They completed all the work and I am very happy with the results. You can trust Attila and Promise Land Homes."

"They removed the existing siding, repaired whatever dry rot they found, added shear wall and insulation where there was none and then installed the Hardee Board siding. The crew showed up every day and did their work as intrusively as they could. They were friendly and responded well to any concerns I had with anything they did. I am 100% satisfied."

"I feel incredibly fortunate to have found and worked with Eric, Bob, and their fantastic team. When it was time to replace the siding on my mom's home, they made the entire process smooth and stress-free. Communication was open and honest throughout, so I always knew exactly where we stood. If any issues came up, they didn’t ignore them — they brought them to my attention and helped me address them quickly and efficiently. I would 1000% use them again for any future projects and highly recommend them to friends and family!"

Siding questions, answered by experts

Many people remove aluminum siding to get to the wood underneath, allowing them to paint, stain, or finish the wood to give the home a brand-new aesthetic. With that in mind, you find plywood and related types of wood underneath aluminum siding, but you also run into fiber cement board, strand board, and a diverse array of other building materials. It depends on the original design of the house.

Different types of siding provide unique aesthetic and structural features, with each material commanding its own cost. Availability of materials and shipping costs also factors largely into the cost. The common types of siding materials include:

  • Stucco: $7–$9 per square foot

  • Wood: $1–$15 per square foot

  • Engineered wood: $1–$6 per square foot

  • Aluminum: $3–$6 per square foot

  • Fiber cement: $5–$14 per square foot

  • Brick: $10–$20 per square foot

  • Brick veneer: $3–$10 per square foot

  • Stone: $7–$30 per square foot

  • Stone veneer: $5–$11 per square foot

Brick and stone are the most durable and longest-lasting siding materials, often lasting for 100 years or more with proper maintenance. Copper is another material known to last over 100 years, though it can develop a greenish patina over time. Zinc is a metal siding that can last 80-100 years. While these options are the most expensive, they offer superior value and longevity. For a more affordable yet durable choice, stucco can last 50 to 80 years in dry climates. Fiber cement siding is another excellent middle ground, offering a lifespan of 50 years or more with low maintenance at a lower cost than stone or brick.

Yes, cedar is a popular option for shou sugi ban siding, which is a Japanese style of charring wood for a home’s exterior to finish and protect the material. Cedar shou sugi ban siding costs $15 per square foot on average, but ranges between $2 and $25 per square foot depending on your home’s size, the price of labor, and where you live.

Hardie board is more expensive than vinyl siding. Vinyl siding costs $3 to $12 per square foot, on average, with cost skewing toward the lower end of that range. Hardie board siding costs $7 to $18 per square foot, depending on the style, color, and trim. However, it lasts twice as long and often looks nicer, meaning you’ll see a higher bump in your home value and greater curb appeal from Hardie board.
