"From a firm handshake at our first meeting, to a last, firm handshake after the job was done, I was impressed by Les and his crew. He (Les) gave me a price, gave me a time-frame, and lived up to both. A great team to do business with. The crew was excellent. They began the project at 10 am, and were done, cleaned-up, and gone before 3pm. The difference between our old, wood rotted patio cover and this new one are startling. We've probably added twice as much to the value of our home, as it cost us to replace the old one. Great work, good people, timely results. THANK YOU WESTERN SKY"

"Sierra Sunscreens staff were on time, careful of landscaping, cleaned up well after themselves, and came back when a small hidden opening was discovered. They fixed it immediately. They even installed a dog door for Ms. Rosie. We wanted to keep as much sunlight on the patio as possible so they recommended screening that is practically invisible. We are very pleased with their workmanship and professionalism."

Awnings questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on material type, design complexity, and additional features like lighting or gutters.

Yes, you can install an awning yourself, and it can be an excellent DIY project with immediate benefits. This is most feasible for smaller, pre-assembled units. However, awnings are often heavy and awkward for one person to handle, so you should always have at least one helper. If you have difficulty lifting heavy objects, professional installation is recommended to ensure proper mounting and durability.

Costs range from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on size, material, and design complexity.

It’s best to keep your awning retracted if winds are 25 miles per hour or more to make sure your awning doesn’t sustain irreparable damage due to wind. Some awnings can take winds up to 30 miles per hour without any damage, but it’s best to consult the manufacturer’s guidance. A good rule of thumb is if it’s too windy for you to comfortably stand outside, it’s time to bring the awning in.

If you're handy, it might be worth trying to install retractable awnings yourself. Just keep in mind that motorized retractable awnings require much more know-how, and the risk of something costly going wrong (such as damaging your new awnings) is higher.

Mechanical awnings should be easy to install for the average person with some handyman skills.
