"I had John Wood Construction repair some dry rot about 6 yrs ago so when I needed some more work done I called them. Their work was so incredible and the pricing was very good I didn’t contact anyone else. I had the same experience with this job. Their craftsmanship is incredible! I had dry rot on the window moldings and on the end of 4x8 patio support beam. The only way you see any repair is the paint is much whiter. Now I’m gonna have to get the house painted! Couldn’t be happier with the work John and his son did!"

"I was doing a significant redesign of our deck. Best Rate was very accommodating. They were flexible enough to allow me to do parts of the project and offered me tips on what I might encounter. They caught a mistake in the plan I had drawn up, communicated with me and offered a solution. I would hire these guys again in a heartbeat."

"They were great! Very responsive and honest! They fixed up and epoxied the cracks in the stem wall on the raised foundation of my house. The project seemed daunting but these guys made the process so easy. And looks great! One more thing to check off the house projects list! â ï¸"

Customers say: True professional

"Leo was very helpful and quick to respond. We’re happy with how our 2 bathrooms turned out. Project was completed within the time promised. Our only complaint is that the workers did not clean up very well. But overall, we’re satisfied and we’ll use them again."

"Mr. Tuttman and his crew, Daniel and Mario, all worked to produce the finest quality workmanship for our deck repair on our second-story balcony. Their adherence to a quality product is admirable. They gave us a deck that will last for 40 years or more. The carpentry work was excellent and they improved on the design and overall build to give us a lasting product. I highly recommend them to anyone seeking porch or deck repair."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Both composite and PVC decking are excellent alternatives to wood. However, while composite is moderately priced and lasts around 30 years, PVC costs more and lasts longer. PVC is also more durable, though both materials are more durable than wood decking. Ultimately, the choice between composite and PVC decking will come down to your budget and preferences.

In many areas, a floating deck that isn’t connected to your home and stays under 200 square feet and below 30 inches in height may not need a permit. These freestanding structures are often considered low-risk, which can simplify the building process. However, building codes vary greatly based on location. Before investing in any home improvement project, check with your local permitting office for deck-building guidelines.

You can build an outdoor kitchen on a deck, but you should choose composite decking since it's more heat-resistant. Metal deck materials like steel and aluminum are also good choices because they're less flammable than wood. You should also consider the weight of the kitchen—make sure your deck can support it and any appliances you plan to use. You should consult a structural engineer to confirm exactly how much weight your deck can safely support when building an outdoor kitchen.

Composite decking requires a solid foundation, substructure, or subframe to ensure stability. This base is typically composed of posts, beams, joists, and footings. The frame's joists can be built from various materials like composite, plastic, timber, or metal, as long as the base can support the deck's weight without shifting. A professional deck builder might recommend installing the frame on a solid concrete base for added durability. The final design and materials for the substructure will depend on your budget, the type of deck, and environmental conditions.

Yes, deck pier blocks can be used as an alternative to traditional deck footings, especially for smaller or low-to-the-ground decks. Unlike poured concrete and buried post footings, deck blocks do not require digging or pouring. However, their use is dependent on local building codes. Some areas, particularly those prone to high winds, earthquakes, or hurricanes, may not permit the use of deck pier blocks. It is essential to consult your local building codes before choosing them for your deck project.
