"Wonderfully. They exceeded my expectations in terms of personnel and operations. They have their methods down to a science. They are efficient, fast and clean. Getting rid of asbestos could have been a real nightmare, which is why I'd put it off for some time, but they made it easy and safe."

Small jobs welcome

"Great price for the competition. Wrecked the ceilings, but since the law requires a separate company for asbestos you get screwed. If the person removing it was also the person repairing it I am sure it would go much better."

"Hamilton's price was competitive. The phone representative sound professional and courteous. However, the technician they sent seem very inexperience. He was performing the work (collecting asbestos samples) via Facetime with another senior technician. Also, he only brought a 2-step ladder trying to climb and pull himself up into the attic; he requested to come back the next day, which I'm not available. I ended up borrowing a 3-step ladder from the occupant for the technician. It was risky seeing him pulling himself up into the attic. On his way down, I have to spot him landing his foot on the ladder since the borrowed ladder was still not tall enough."

"We hired Air Clean Environmental (ACE) for ceiling and floor asbestos removal. Testing indicated that the 1100 square feet of flooring had asbestos when in actuality, there wasn't nearly as much asbestos once the flooring was removed. Once that was identified, I believe there should have been a price adjustment on their part as the amount of mastic (asbestos) to be removed was significantly less than initially indicated by testing. On the ceiling, I would like to have had them provide or recommend a company to do the skim coat considering they did recommend the company American Environmental Group (AEG) for the asbestos testing. Other than that they were very good and professional."

Asbestos Removal questions, answered by experts

While it's possible to cover asbestos tile with carpet, it's not recommended. Encapsulating tile beneath carpet doesn't eliminate the health risks. Over time, the asbestos tiles could degrade, releasing fibers into the air and potentially contaminating the carpet. Disturbance during carpet installation or removal might also release fibers.

Although the use of asbestos has declined since the 1980s, it remains in several different types of building construction materials for insulation and as a fire retardant. Typically, asbestos can be found in materials such as ceiling and floor tiles, heat-resistant fabrics and coatings, and roof shingles. You may also find asbestos in textured paint and patching compounds.

Most manufacturers stopped putting asbestos in linoleum before 1980 due to public concerns about its toxicity. However, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) didn’t ban asbestos-containing products until 1989, and a comprehensive ban was not announced until 2024. This means that homes built after 1989 may still have asbestos in their flooring.

The legality of covering asbestos tile with new flooring can vary by location. In some cities, it is not legal to cover asbestos tile due to the risk of causing fibers to become airborne. While a professional method called encapsulation can seal the asbestos in place, it is not always an appropriate solution. In other areas, covering the tile is a legal and reasonable option to prevent fibers from spreading and reduce health hazards. However, the best long-term solution is to have the asbestos professionally and completely removed from your home.

To seal off, or encapsulate, asbestos-containing materials in your home, you’ll need to utilize a sealant specifically designed for asbestos encapsulation. These sealants bind with asbestos fibers to keep them from spreading throughout the air and causing bodily harm. In many cases, these sealants can be simply painted on, but you’ll need to wear a protective body suit as well as an asbestos-rated respirator to interact with these materials safely.
