"Quick to respond. Did a great job trouble shooting issues with light installation and bathroom fan installation and solved a mystery of why my outside electrical plug wasn?t working. In one day he took care of a collection of little to moderate jobs in a kind, curious and professional manner."

"Fernando did an excellent job and I am keeping his contact info for future needs. He is very professional and shows up on time. He made wonderful suggestions on adding power for outdoor lighting and repair and improvement of a switch. Hi recommendation involved hiding the wiring by hooking the 2 devices up to a double switch on an inside wall. Other bidders suggested attaching almost 20 feet of wiring to the exterior of my house. He explained everything very clearly. He noticed an outdoor outlet that wasn't rain proof and suggested changing that out. Finally, his price was very fair and lower than other bids. I highly recommend FH Electric for any electric needs."

"I worked with Electrical Detectives to upgrade a 45-year-old panel, install pendant lights, upgrade some outlets to GFCI, and replace some existing ceiling fixtures. From estimate to job completion, Jason and his associate Phillip were a pleasure to work with. I was informed each step of the way, and I'm very happy with the end result. The pricing was very reasonable for the scope of work provided. I would not hesitate to recommend this firm for any electrical work."

"Even though I could have done the whole job myself, I wanted to hire a pro who was familiar with current electrical codes as I was very busy with other projects. So I do know a proper job when I see it and Pann of Enlighten Electric does a proper job. He came recommended to us by another friend he had done work for. He listened to what I wanted to do, and suggested better ways to do it in some cases. He is on time, and works diligently without a lot of time wasting or screwing around. He is a non-smoker/non-chewer which I appreciate, and he cleans up after his mess. The inspector passed his work quickly without drama and PG&E had no issues with hooking up the new drop to the new weatherhead. I flipped on the new 200 amp main breaker and we are happy campers (and now super-powered!). Highly recommended."

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

The direction you want your ceiling fan to move in depends on the season you’re in. During summer, you want it to move counterclockwise to produce a cooling downdraft. During winter, you want it to move clockwise to circulate warm air throughout the room.

Whether you can install a ceiling fan yourself depends on if you're replacing an existing fixture or installing one where no wiring exists. If you are replacing an existing fan, an experienced DIYer may be able to do the job, which can save on labor costs. This work typically doesn’t require a permit, but there’s always a safety risk when dealing with electrical components, so hiring a pro is still a good idea, especially if you aren't handy. Keep in mind you may need a special ladder for high or vaulted ceilings. However, if you are installing a new ceiling fan where there is no current fixture, you must hire a licensed electrician. In most areas, it is required by law that a professional runs new wiring and pulls the necessary permits. Attempting to install wiring yourself can be dangerous and a code violation.

There are several telltale signs to let you know that your ceiling fan needs servicing or replacement. For instance, if it’s wobbling, rotating too slowly, or if your ceiling fan is making noise such as squeaks, buzzes, and thumps, it’s time to have it looked at by a professional. Not only may it indicate a potential problem with the fan itself, but it could also signal a red flag that it’s improperly assembled or there’s an issue with the wiring.

Most ceiling fans have a lifespan of anywhere from five to 15 years or 10 years on average. Just how long your ceiling fan lasts depends on the quality of the parts, how much it’s used, and how well you maintain it. A fan with a weak motor that runs on the medium setting nonstop is likely to have a shorter lifespan compared to a fan with a powerful motor that runs on the slowest setting for air circulation.

The square footage of your room will dictate the correct ceiling fan blade size. For example:

  • Rooms smaller than 75 square feet require a fan that is 29 to 36 inches.

  • Rooms up to 175 square feet require 42- to 48-inch fans.

  • Rooms up to 350 square feet require 52- to 56-inch fans.

  • Expansive spaces over 350 square feet need a fan larger than 60 inches.
