"We love our cabinets! They look fantastic while remaining affordable. The friendly staff at AWD helped us from start to finish. They are very knowledgeable and gave us advice and tips when needed. "Angel was responsive to my inquiry by email. Came out for an estimate to install stock cabinets, counter top and sink as well as all the plumbing. The day he was scheduled to come to install he called me to explain he had made a mistake on his estimate and wanted to talk with me first because he said he would not just come to do the work then tell me, this was for $20.00! that impressed me a lot. There are three primary ways to attach upper kitchen cabinets to a wall, and installers may use more than one method at a time. The most common method is to drive screws through the back of the cabinets and into studs in the wall behind. Sometimes cabinets are glued to the wall with strong adhesive. Often a combination of screws and adhesive is desirable. The last way is by hanging the cabinets on hardware brackets that attach to the wall before cabinet installation.

While most kitchen island installations do not require a permit, some situations do. Any major kitchen renovation will require one, and depending on your municipality, you might also need one if you install new plumbing or electrical work. 

Your kitchen island installation pro will be able to determine if you need a permit for your job, which can run you between $460 and $2,900, depending on the permits required.

It’s best to stick with lightweight cabinets, such as medium-density fiberboard, if you don’t have a wall stud to secure them to. Unless you’re attaching the cabinet to a flat board attached to wall studs, it’s best not to risk it with heavy cabinetry or contents. Solid wood cabinets and heavy dishware should be avoided if you cannot secure the cabinet to a wall stud. Either way, always check the weight on your wall anchors and be sure not to exceed it.

The time it takes to install new cabinets depends on the scope of the project. For a kitchen installation, you can expect the process to take anywhere from 2-5 days for a standard layout up to a couple of weeks for more complex projects, depending on the number of cabinets and the installation space. For a smaller project, such as installing cabinets in a bathroom, you can expect the work to take a week or less. Your cabinet installation expert will be able to provide you with a realistic timeframe.

As a homeowner, there are a few things you can do to prepare for your cabinet installer. Once the cabinets are ready for your home, you can do the following:

  • Ensure pets are safely in another room, out of the way of open doors and large moving objects.

  • Clear countertops for removal.

  • Tidy the floor the installers will walk through and around. 

  • Prepare to have the installers in your home for the entire day, for multiple days, until the project is done. Expect to have a noisy environment, especially if they will remove old, existing cabinets.
