"Ryan was perfectly on-time and was a plumbing scholar and a gentleman. We had a simple drain replacement under a new sink. Going to Western saved me at least another day of trying to figure out proper parts and doing the install myself, and it also saved my wife's ears from hearing my salty language."

"OK. Price of toilets was higher than my understanding of first quotes, and there were dirty handprints and other debris after installation. I had used Tony's once previously with much more satisfying results."

"Our garbage disposal broke on Sunday morning. Mr. Rooter was the only provider I could find who provides service on Sundays. There were able to come over within a couple of hours. The garbage disposal was fixed and they even did a check of my faucet/toilet/water heater for no charge. When I called, they even let me purchase an available Angie's List deal then and there to save me $100 off the total price (so I paid $300 total). I will definitely use them again.

"Major damage was found in pipes under the floor of the laundry room. The repairs took six days, including over the weekend. I found Peter to be honest, competent, and trustworthy. He kept my interests in mind and did not try to sell me more work than necessary. The final cleanup after the job was done could have been better, but that's a small point. I will be calling on him for bathroom work in the near future."

Install Garbage Disposal questions, answered by experts

On average, a garbage disposal can last anywhere from 7 to 12 years, with many models functioning well for about 10 years. With heavy usage, a motor may last a minimum of five years, while grinding plates will wear down over time. It's generally a good idea to consider a replacement if your unit is approaching the 10-year mark. Other signs that it's time for a new disposal include frequent leaks, persistent clogs, lingering odors, lack of power, or unusual noises. If your unit is not that old, it's worth investigating if a less expensive part, like a rubber seal or a loose hose, is causing the issue.

If the cost of repairing a leaking garbage disposal is close to the cost of replacing the disposal, then fixing the unit might not make sense. When deciding if you should repair or replace your garbage disposal, consider the age of your garbage disposal, the cost of the repair, and whether your garbage disposal has had other problems recently to help you decide if the cost of repairing the leak is better than the cost of replacing the disposal.

These appliances certainly increase the number of things allowed down the drain, but they’re not foolproof. There are several items you shouldn’t put in your garbage disposal, according to manufacturers and technicians. Don’t put coffee grounds down the drain. The same goes for eggshells, potato peels, hard foods, onion skins, and any dry, expandable food. Most importantly, never put grease or oils down the drain.

The most common garbage disposal size in the U.S. is 1/2 horsepower. This size is ideal for households with three or fewer people or those that don't produce much food waste. Although 1/2 horsepower can't handle the typical food waste load for a household of four (which is about 250 pounds of food waste annually) as effectively as 3/4 horsepower, it remains the most common size of garbage disposal on the market.

Never put glass in the garbage disposal. It can damage your disposal or eject shards of glass out of the disposal and cause injury. If you get broken glass in your garbage disposal, turn it off and cut the power from the breaker, use a tool like pliers or tongs to remove the glass, and use a wet-dry vacuum to remove the remaining glass pieces. If you can’t access the disposal safely, call a garbage disposal repair pro.
