"Bryan was very thorough and he was very clear about the options available to get our two toilets fixed. He was very personable, considerate and a pleasure to work with. Pricing was reasonable as well. A Honest Plumber LLC is our new plumber for life!!"

Hi, I’m William Gharabekyan. Son of Varuzh Gharabekyan, the owner of our company. I graduated high school and wanted to shift my focus on plumbing and helping my fathers company out, to eventually retire him within the next few years. I want to expand our business and offer our skills to more people nearby. I want to eventually run our company and make it successful, but first I have to start with this. My father grew his company but did not know much English or tech skills to start doing stuff like this, so I am here to do that.

"I would give Big J's 10 stars! Jonathan (the owner) personally communicated with me over several phones call and texts. He sent me a fair estimate, which I compared with 2 other plumbing companies, and his estimate was much more detailed and a fair price. He arrived to my house on time. I had to leave the house and he sent me a few pictures of his evaluations of the plumbing issue at hand. I approved of the work and when he was done, he went over what he had fixed and the materials he used. He recommended a few follow ups I might want to do to keep my plumbing efficient. He cleaned up after his work and left everything spotless. Jonathan even contacted me a week later to make sure everything was going well with my plumbing. His attention to detail and knowledge was beyond what I've ever experienced from other plumbers. Thank you Big J's!"

Sewer Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Some experts estimate that descaling your cast iron pipes can extend their lifetime by upwards of 50 years, although there’s not a lot of research to prove it. But we do know that without proper maintenance, cast iron pipes can quickly rust—leading to more expensive issues like burst pipes or main line clogs.

Snaking a drain can take as little as a few minutes for small, simple clogs, up to two hours or more for tough clogs located further down the drain line. For tougher clogs, a professional drain cleaner can likely get the job done much more quickly because they have the necessary tools and expertise. However, your drain cleaning pro might not be able to give you a firm time estimate until inspecting the clog and its surrounding plumbing.

There are several common signs that your main sewer line may be clogged. Key indicators include multiple fixtures in your home draining slowly, gurgling sounds coming from drains or toilets, and water backing up into showers, sinks, or toilets. You might also notice water backing up from the plumbing system's drain cleanout, water in your basement drain, or unexplained wet patches on your lawn. Foul odors, such as the smell of raw sewage or rotten eggs, are another common symptom. The most reliable way to confirm a main sewer line clog is to hire a professional plumber to perform a camera inspection.

The average cost to snake your main sewer line is around $250 for a simple snake. Most sewer line specialists charge between $45 and $200 per hour for main sewer line snaking, so the time involved plays a major role. The price you’ll pay will depend on the severity of the clog, the item causing the backup, how long it takes to remove the item, and more. A more severe issue that requires unclogging a main sewer line will cost $3,100 on average.

If you’re wondering whether rats can come up the toilet, the unfortunate answer is yes, it’s possible, though it’s extremely rare. These rodents are excellent swimmers and can travel through sewer pipes in search of food, and they may follow plumbing lines leading to your home if they’re drawn by the scent of scraps and waste. The toilet’s U-bend holds a small pocket of air, which can help a rat catch its breath before making its final push into your bathroom. While more common in cities with larger rat populations, this can happen anywhere with connected sewer systems; sealing entry points and keeping drains clean can help reduce the risk.
