Asphalt is not the same thing as blacktop. Blacktop is a type of asphalt, but contains less bitumen, making it less durable than asphalt. Asphalt is a better option for major highways, streets, and driveways, while blacktop is more suitable to playgrounds.

If you don’t want to seal the entire driveway using a squeegee, you can use a roller instead. Rolling the driveway sealer also provides an even, sufficient coating, although it might require more skills to control the speed and pressure. We don’t recommend spraying the driveway sealer because it would cause more splash, hence wasting more material. If anything, you may spray the sealant and go over the surface again with a squeegee to ensure proper coating.

Sealant comes in 5-gallon buckets that can cover up to 400 square feet. Measure your driveway to get the exact square footage, and remember to factor in enough sealant for two coats.

The cost of asphalt driveway repair is usually similar to the cost of average concrete driveway repairs, but maintaining asphalt tends to be less expensive on a per-instance basis. For example, resurfacing asphalt costs about $1 less per square foot, but it doesn’t last as long as concrete and will need more frequent repairs. You don't technically need to seal your driveway after pressure washing, but doing so will help keep your driveway clean for longer. The best driveway sealer depends on the type of driveway you have. To seal asphalt, consider an asphalt emulsion sealer, fast-drying sealer, or latex acrylic sealer. Concrete driveways commonly use acrylic sealers or penetrating sealers.
