"Ricardo removed my concrete driveway in my backyard. He was easy to communicate with and adjusted to working in the back alley that was blocked causing extra work for him. Since the project was close to my neighbors he was respectful of the start time and completed the project in less than 3 hours. He was able to adapt to my specific needs so I would recommend being clear with him as he was incredibly easy to work with on changes that came up."

"Mauricio from Solid Ground Landscaping LLC is an incredible gardener, handyman, landscaper, etc. and there is pretty much nothing that he cannot do with amazing talent! He came very highly recommended and got to work the same day with a very hard working crew, punctual and ready to work and did above and beyond what I asked him to do. He knows how to do everything (handyman, electrician, plumbing, pavers, sprinklers, junk removal, cement and patio work, and so much more!) He is truly your Go To Guy! I truly value and respect our working relationship and his overall work ethic. He will not let you down! I can usually call him and he is often times available to work that same day! His prices are also very reasonable for the high quality of work he provides. No job. Is too small or too large for his company to take on! He is truly the best!"

Garbage Collection questions, answered by experts

Garbage disposals are durable appliances that usually last at least eight years as long as you clean and maintain them. It’s relatively rare for a garbage disposal to break on its own, as most malfunctions happen due to user errors, like overstuffing the grinding compartment or damaging the blades by trying to dispose of metal or bone. Eventually, cracks or leaks could develop in the unit, which requires a full replacement.

Whether it's worth repairing your garbage disposal depends on its age and the specific problem. Generally, if the unit is eight years old or younger, repair is a good option. For minor issues like a bad seal or a simple jam, a repair can be inexpensive, sometimes under $10. However, if the motor is broken (a repair that can cost $150 or more) or the unit is getting old, it's often more cost-effective to replace the entire disposal.

Soil is just one of the items you shouldn't put down a garbage disposal. Garbage disposals are only meant for soft, non-fibrous foods. Large amounts of topsoil, dirt, or rocks will damage the blades of your garbage disposal or clog the pipes. If a small amount of dirt goes down the drain as you repot a plant, you shouldn't have to worry, but never dump a whole pot of soil in the sink for fast disposal.

If your garbage disposal powers up and you can hear it hum, but the arms inside aren’t moving, the problem might be a stubborn clog, a build-up of grease, or a jam of the impeller plate. To troubleshoot these, ensure your unit is off and disconnected from its power source before checking inside the drain or attempting to manually rotate the impeller arms or plate from the underside of the unit. A hex wrench can help.

On average, a garbage disposal can last anywhere from 7 to 12 years, with many models functioning well for about 10 years. With heavy usage, a motor may last a minimum of five years, while grinding plates will wear down over time. It's generally a good idea to consider a replacement if your unit is approaching the 10-year mark. Other signs that it's time for a new disposal include frequent leaks, persistent clogs, lingering odors, lack of power, or unusual noises. If your unit is not that old, it's worth investigating if a less expensive part, like a rubber seal or a loose hose, is causing the issue.
